oh for sure i can't wait to infodump about astronomy to unsuspecting friends

its been a month but this means i have far too much astronomy wisdom and a giant notebook full of notes to prove it

you all asked for this (well specter did but still)

-stars twinkle because the distance and turbulence in our atmosphere distorts the image, causing them to appear to shift or flicker, thus "twinkling. Planets don't twinkle becaues they're far closer and thus there's less distortion
-people with 20/20 vision can see a few thousand stars at a time
-The moon causes tides due to "tidal force," which is essentially the moon's gravity pulling at the earth and stretching it ever so slightly. Water responds to this stretching the most, so it swells at the strongest points of the moon's pull and moves as the moon orbits the earth, which is why we have two low tides and two high tides
-Spring tides are even higher tides that happen on new moons due to the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth, causing more force to pull at the oceans than a regular tide
-Proxigean tides are even higher tides when the earth is closest to the sun during a full or new moon, allowing the sun's tidal force to affect the earth (it usually doesn't due to its distance)
-Spaghettification is the result of when the gravity around a black hole is so strong its tidal force stretches everything into a long, thin string
-There is not a solid, definite term for what defines a planet. Thus Pluto can be a planet if you want it to be since we can't really say what is or isn't a planet other than we said so
-Auroras are caused by solar residue from solar flares or other similar phenomena interacting with Earth's magnetic field. The difference particles and elements in our atmosphere (specifically the ozone layer iirc) interacting with this residue are what cause the colors.
-The moon has two types of terrain: Highlands and maria (pronounced mahr-ee-ah, not like the name, more like how you pronounce Mario). Highlands are heavily cratered areas, while Maria are darker and smoother. The dark patches you see on the moon are the maria. Interestingly enough though, the far side of the moon has almost no maria and is comprised almost entirely of highlands.
-five of the planets (Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn) are naked eye objects which means they're visible without binoculars or a telescope. Uranus is technically visible to the naked eye but only for those with extremely sharp vision and at certain times of teh year when the sky is dark and clear enough.
-Mercury is named after the roman god of messengers because of its extremely fast orbit of 88 days (which is also the number of official constellations in the sky)
-Mercury's days and years are offset since Mercury's day is 2/3 the length of its year, which means that for Mercury to reach the same point in its orbit with the same part of it facing the sun, it takes two orbits.
-MERCURY CONTAINS ICE! Cold traps on its surface are deep holes where sunlight never reaches, allowing ice to remain untouched.
-Venus is the third brightest object in the sky, following the sun and moon due to its high reflectivity
-Venus has phases just like the moon, and is actually at its brightest when in its crescent phase since its closest to earth
-Venus's atmosphere is essentially like a sci-fi future dystopian version of earth: The surface is hot enough to melt led, it's atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, and it rains sulfuric acid, though its so hot that it evaporates before it hits the ground. Venus might also snow metal due to photos taken of its mountain ranges.
-Venus rotates backwards (retrograde orbit) and extremely slowly, so much so that if you were to jog around the equator you would be moving faster than its rotating. Due to this slow rotation it also has no magnetic field, and is also the most spherical of the planets.
-All surface features on Venus are named after women under international agreement
-Mars is red becaues the surface is mostly covered in oxidized iron dust and basalt
-Mars is home to the largest ovlcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons
-Mars also has ice! The poles have an extremely thick layer of water ice that is seasonally covered in several meters of dry ice which thaws during Mars' summer. Almost a third of the Martian atmosphere freezes to create this ice.
-Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and also has the fastest spin, only being ten hours long
-Four of Jupiter's moons would be naked eye objects if Jupiter weren't so reflective and bright
-Jupiter's Red Spot has been known to exist since the 1600s, and the storm is kept up due to Jupiter's high momentum from its rotation
-Jupiter doesn't have a solid surface, being a gas giant, it just eventually turns into liquid hydrogen the closer you get to the core
-Jupiter gets aurorae!
-Jupiter has 67 moons. The first four, Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa, are the largest moons and were discovered by Galileo, and as such are called the Galilean Moons.
-Europa is theorized to contain a liquid water ocean under its thick ice surface, even more water than on Earth.
-Saturn has 2/3rds the density of water, which means it'd technically float
-To scale compared to Saturn, its rings are as thin as a sheet of paper
-Saturn has over 60 moons
-Two of Saturn's moons, Titan and Enceladus, are thought to be capable of supporting life much like Europa due to their similar compositions and underground oceans.
-Uranus is an ice giant
-The pressure in Uranus's atmosphere is theorized to be so strong it can crush carbon into diamonds, where they fall deeper into the mantle and into an ocean of liquid diamond
-Uranus rotates sideways??? I??? I don't know why it just does
-All of Uranus's moons are named after Shakespeare characters
-Uranus has reddish rings that were discovered completely by accident in the 90s
-Neptune is also an ice giant and is similar in composition to Uranus, though far, far denser
-Neptune has surface windspeeds of over 2000kph, faster than the speed of sound
-Neptune is the only planet to be discovered using math after astronomers realized Uranus's erratic movement had to be affected by another undiscovered planet (they were right).
-Neptune was also originally thought to have another planet affecting its orbit, though it was later discovered this was due to a miscalculation of Uranus and Neptune's masses.

echo's comment on shadow just reminded me that when i was 4 I accidentally found sonic x on tv and I knew absolutely nothing about sonic the hedgehog i just knew it looked cool and even tho i barely saw him shadow was my favorite he was like the coolest thing i'd ever seen

consequently this is how i knew a lot about sonic despite having never even seen gameplay of any of the games until like two years ago
