I guess that makes more sense for his character. Once again, I can't really remember a whole lot about Shirou himself so I'm sorta reluctant to just bring out an opinion xD my current view on him is like memes and UBW Abridged and SWORDS and yeah it's not a very serious memory at all xD
Kiritsugu is like, peak.
Offline
Abridged is pretty good at spelling it out tho ngl.
Kiritsugu fits with the loser thing you guys were talking about, imo. Idk if it's because of Urobuchi's biases or anything like that (I'm not that familiar with his works), but even with Shirou's idea of being a hero of justice clearly being something he most predominantly got from Kiritsugu, Kiritsugu's version of the concept ended up feeling more childish to me. Which is hilarious seeing as he is pretty much an edgelord.

-Galaxian-I think the funny thing is that Kiritsugu is the one who wants to save everyone right off the bat
Yeah, that's probably a better way to think about it.
I still don't like him tho 🗿
Honestly they're both equally childish too. It's just the genre of work that they are placed in.

Can I ask if your opinion would be changed if Shirou dressed and acted like Kiritsugu without changing his backstory? I'm just wondering how much of the design and general archetype is factoring into that opinion xD btw I don't necessarily like him either (even in the VN lol),
-Galaxian-I favour EMIYA
That being said, I also think Shirou is more appreciable when you compare him to his older self. I feel like his more distinctive characteristics are more apparent that way for me
Offline
Yes, it would 🗿
But at the same time, I don't think it would be him. It would just be a mini Kiritsugu, and that just doesn't sit right with me.
In reality, going into Fate UBW with that sorta viewpoint probably would have changed my experience a lot. I think I didn't take it that way because:
1. Oversaturation of tragic backstories
2. Loads of Shonen protags having sad backstories (even tho Shirou is not a shonen protag)
3. It's a point I haven't heard of before/general inexperience in media literacy.
Some points I want to go more into detail though...
I think it was also because such topics were never really addressed in UBW.Sh irou looks and acts more put together more than nearly any other character in that timeline. He knows how to cook, how to fix things, has a good routine, works hard, etc etc. There really isn't anything that notes at him being broken other than wanting to always help people, and from that trait people can take different interpretations as to why he wants to help people in the first place.
I do think also the genres used comes into play as well. You could argue that nearly any shonen protag with a sad backstory has survivors guilt and that's the reason why they want to help people. Even so, that path is never really explored because of the genre that said protag resides in. UBW is undoubtably much lighter in tone when compared to Zero, so themes that would have probably been addressed in Zero are not done so in UBW, and vice versa.

Toward the better? (/j) How 'bout Kiritsugu with an older Shirou design?

You might not like Heaven's Feel.

True, a big criticism of F/sn anime adaptations is that they kinda oversimplify Shirou. But Saber's route was made by another studio, so that complicates things ig. But the specification on why he wants to do that is only really present for the reader and for people like Archer (for reasons) and Rin ('cause female protag [of that route]). So I'd say that's pretty much the point--on the surface, he seems like just a really helpful guy, but the truth is that his being was pretty much destroyed by the fire and his only life purpose is solely based off this one guy who adopted him after his parents were killed in said fire. It's pretty disturbing imo.
I can't talk too much without going into Heaven's Feel, but I do feel like the anime adaptations do well in that they still reflect the fact that you can't just take F/sn in its entirety without looking at all three routes. So, I hope you and Specter will talk about your thoughts on Heaven's Feel Shirou as well when the time comes.
The conclusion of this is funny since I started off saying you might not like Heaven's Feel.

One day I'll watch Heaven's Feel, they say it's a masterpiece and the animation intrigues me but for some reason I still haven't dared look into it

I did said oversaturation, but I didn't say that I don't like them. Maybe it was incorrect word usage. In my experience more characters have tragic backstories compared to normal backstories (albeit that depends on genre ofc). Though it does make me consider when does a backstory cross from normal to sad/tragic and stuff? Because everyone has ups and downs in their backstory, but that doesn't exactly make it tragic.
Yeah. I was initially hesitant to speak on it because I don't have all 3 routes. I just have 1 and a prequel. I know how much each can reveal about the others. Just kinda like how Zero shines some extra light. Nevertheless I felt like I should say my ideas from my standpoint.

Tbh look into it just for stuff like Kirei driving and yeeting Shirou through a window. (the memes I mean)
and I think I accidentally turned your homethread into the we don't know how to name this chat thread, sorry.
I haven't watched the last one of the HF adaptation either. I don't really know what the fandom's consensus on it is, but I can see a lot of the usual criticism of Ufotable from what I can tell.

True true. And I didn't do a good job of it, but when I was saying you might not like HF, it wasn't directly addressing the oversaturation of tragic backstories you mentioned. Funnily enough, sometimes I dunno when a real person's backstory is tragic or not either.
FYI, Zero isn't a strict prequel, but I don't have a direct source for this, I just hear it being talked about a lot. Apparently some events are different in the actual events leading up to F/sn, or else some things wouldn't line up (but if you asked me about this I wouldn't know either)

Roblox games are really funny cause there’s like a million of them but there’s only a handful of good ones. And usually I just play the same few games that I started in 2018 over and over again, but sometimes when I’m bored I go look around to see if there’s any other fun ones?
I think it’s super funny how there’s a huge chunk of them that have cool anime-ish banners and icons but the game itself is… very roblox-y. And it’s such a letdown lol. This is especially prevalent in open world RPG kind of games apparently, though I haven’t found any that catch my attention after World of Magic shut down. Some of them have really cool avatar customizations but after doing that there isn’t a lot more to do except run around with abysmal speed and hit random enemies around. So nah, that’s not for me. Plus it’s just really repetitive, but they’re popular for some reason. Maybe the players just like that kind of gameplay.
I did find one that’s got pretty cool lore and dialogue cutscenes and all but it’s new and still in dev, so there’s barely any players and it’s super grindy anyways so I’ll just wait to see if with more updates more players come in. Not fun to run around alone in a game that’s supposed to be for a bunch of players.
Still, I really admire the teams that get together to dev the games, especially the more complex and polished ones. It’s like, wow man, you managed to do something fun with the roblox studio? Props to you. And I imagine it must be hard to actually get a bunch of players into the game and stuff so yeah.
Anyways, I dig around roblox game libraries for fun because sometimes I just need to laugh at game content. Like… uhhh I can’t think of examples right now honestly. Welp. I mean the fun games though, not the obbies and work-at-pizza-place kind of stuff. I don’t find those to be attractive cause most of the time they’re really bare bones and are just obstacle courses with skins. A note of congratulations to this one obby game though cause it was like Sky:CotL but in Roblox. Like it had lore and areas and stuff and the mechanics were imitations or something. But it didn’t catch my attention enough cause the only good thing was the piano music. The obstacle course itself was like wayyyy too easy. Gj to the team tho.
I was honestly making this post because, after going around, I, by some stroke of luck, found a game that has caught my attention and I actually liked it so much that I’ve been playing it a bunch. It’s a team-based game. It has characters that you can buy by just playing. The player team has to have synergy. It’s similar to Among Us. Every round is different. And… the characters have unlockable short story lore??? And voice acting??? And character voiceline interactions???? What??? This is a first for the Roblox games I’ve played. And I’m grinding out the lore for some characters, because this is amazing. This game is Daybreak 2. And I can’t stop playing it lol.
Also while making this post I found out it has a wiki so… lol uhh yeah I don’t want to dig around too much yet cause I wanna unlock the lore in-game instead of reading it all straight from there.

Thought it’d be better to separate the posts cause I want to gush about Daybreak. It’s been super fun for me.
The description says it’s an “asymmetrical 1v8 horror game where you either play as the ruthless hunter or a team-oriented survivor each with their own unique abilities”. It follows the pattern of killer vs. survivors that a lot of games have (a pattern I’ve liked ever since I played freeze tag as a child), and in particular this one really called my attention because it’s like a 1000% better version of a game I used to play a lot before named “Flee the Facility”. In essence, the survivors have to power up generators around the map in order to unlock the exit, while the killer has to, well, kill everyone before they escape. While fixing the generators you get skillchecks which if you fail, the generator blows up and you lose progress and the killer is alerted of your position. So, fairly easy, power up the gens, avoid failing the skillchecks, avoid the killer and escape at the end of it all.
Well, the issue is that the killer also has special abilities that vary depending on the character, but all of them have a skill which temporarily highlights the players’ location on the map. This is detection, and like some survivor characters have skills which let them avoid it, but most don’t and it usually means that someone is going to get chased down. So then you just run and run and hope the killer either loses interest or that you can get out of their field of vision. Or, as some higher-stamina survivors do, catch the killer’s attention to lead them to a chase away from the teammates who are working on generators. It’s all about teamwork. Oh yeah, and you have like two lives basically. The first time you get hit you get downed and are left to bleed out (you can die if left like this for too long) unless another teammate comes to revive you which might be risky cause it takes a bit of time and the killer can get them while they’re doing that.
All characters have either passive or active skills depending on their lore, and are all really varied and in different niches, ranging from stunning the killer for a few seconds to something more complicated like teleporting across the map through lockers (in which you can hide temporarily). The character I’ve been maining, Callum, is a jock and so his ability is to select someone as teammate and then they can see each other at all times and have extra stamina (until one of them dies). Or the back-up character I have, Yeona, a k-pop obsessed fan whose ability is that since she’s so obsessed she gets “posts” every time the killer interacts with a survivor (pretty often) and so I can see the killer’s position in relation to me almost all the time.
Fun stuff! Once I max out Callum’s levels, I want to get some other characters to test out their abilities. I really like it that no characters are truly locked, as they’re all available to buy once you have enough coins from playing the game and you get these each round quite generously. Skins and effects and poses are a bit more expensive but still worth it cause some skins have lore tidbits.
The dynamic of skills is something that I’ve really enjoyed in this game because while loading into the game, you can see the other players selecting their characters and so you can get some cool balanced team comps like someone to distract the killer while others rush through the generators, someone plays as healer, someone buffs the team, and someone detects the killer. There’s also skills that work for a single character, like Yeona’s Obsessed skill or Yronica’s Egocentric Leech skill (I hate seeing Yronica mains so much, she needs other characters to die near her so she can be invincible) so yeah! A variety and it tends to change round from round. You don’t know which killer you’re going against until you’re in the game too, so you have to be quite flexible.
As much as I like the gameplay and mechanics, what I’ve really liked the most about this game is: the lore. It’s so weird for a Roblox game to have lore, let alone multiple short stories for each unit. And the best thing is that some characters have relationships with each other and you can see how their lores tie together. Callum has lore with Yronica and two other dudes which are his friend group, for example, while other characters have other interactions and some even with the killer. I think it gives the characters an extra layer of depth that isn’t just “oh cool different character skins” and these are related to the passives and stats (yes, each character has different stats). The avatars themselves have the standard Roblox bodies but for a game that has anime-y art and icons and stickers, the avatars reflect that quite well I’ll say. Like, wow, I could totally do fanart of these characters. They’re just that good.
Something super cool is that the game is voice-acted too. Each character has their own voice, and you can buy some voicelines to say whenever you want. Aside from that, there are event-triggered voicelines, like when healing teammates or being chased by the killer or just when something happens. Some of the characters have voicelines that appear only when they’re with another character (Callum’s got special voicelines when healing ppl he knows) or when they find their lore-relevant teammates dead.
I think that’s the most relevant parts of the game right now. There are a lot of fun things you can do while you’re in the match, and I really like that the players are kind and have team spirit, which is rare to see online (much more in Roblox).
As for me, I’m currently maining Callum for survivor as I mentioned before, cause he has good stamina and I like playing healer which is his highest stat (although I mostly go for gen completion tbh. I want to change that playstyle). There are other characters I want to get to test them out, and eventually I would like to be able to play all of them? But who knows, maybe my interest in the game will wane before that happens, so yeah I’ll just have to see. I want to get a character couple: Wren, who is so bored of his job that his skill is to do gens in autopilot or smthn (something about stacks), and Tabitha, who wants to be a mom so she’s a super good healer and, well, acts like a mom. They have matching skin sets available for purchase and I think that’s cute. I also want Dae-jung (another healer lol) cause he as an interesting dynamic with one of the killers. There’s also a pizza delivery guy who’s got some aesthetic (Jack), and there’s also like one or two characters that are ghost-related so I want to get those as well. One day.
The killers have really interesting lore as too so I want to grind out their stories. I’m currently raising my level with The Android (P3-NG) who has really good skills but… he’s really hard to manage when it comes to killing, and as such I’ve only won once (then again I’m never really good at playing killers in any game). I’m quite invested in his story for now, he’s an AI who was supposed to watch over an inventor’s daughter and was friends with a bodyguard, but after being given a body I think his inventor had other plans and so P3-NG was going to have his emotions turned off? So he killed his inventor cause he doesn’t have a concept of morals and then his bodyguard friend tried to destroy him and P3-NG was sorry but then he got kidnapped and rebuilt and reset by a rival company. And sooooo I think the story is kinda sad tbh. Especially bc when he kills Yan or Nathan (daughter and bodyguard) in-game, he says something like “Maybe in another world we could’ve all been happy) and idk man that’s just sad. I really really like this robot guy. I could make fanart of him tbh. Once I’m done grinding out the Android’s lore and stickers I would like to main The Idol because I’m ngl I really like the lovesick obsession aesthetic??? But I have serious skill issues when playing as killer so I’ll have to get through that first before wanting to discover the lore for any of the others.
Something interesting is that the game lets you turn off your eligibility for killer. In other games I would probably do that ngl (Among Us…) but here I need the exp to get the character goodies. I’m not sure where else to go with this but I’m having a lot of fun with the game and I’m happy over it tbh. I just think it’s really funny that I’m so invested in a Roblox game of all things lol. Looking forward to future updates and stuff tbh.

Counting down the hours till Artfight... I'm ready though my inspiration isn't as ready I have to admit lol
anyways I first have to write an essay deadlined for today and uhhhh yeah let's see how I manage this month! I want to give heads up for partial inactivity like I did last year bc of AF but I'm honestly not sure. It's going to be that + finals (have been scheduled for one week before the usual date wth) + a part time job I hope to get + getting ready for camp on the last week of the month and, so yep, gonna be pretty packed for July.

Just something really quick I wanted to share is that it's helped me with my art to do like lil thumbnails on paper before I start on a piece (esp if it's gonna be digital), that way I can sort of visualize and move around the objects and wee if I ike it on what canvas shape and all.
I mean it depends tbh most of the time I really just wing it with an idea I have in my mind or somethimes without any particular idea at all, just a vibe, but there's other times in which I do have something specific I want to achieve.
Why is piece composition so hard.

Okay, I've decided. Inactivity notice for this week because I got my job and this is probably the last "free" week I'll have this month so I'm no-lifing ArtFight.
I'll check back in with more next week and still continue to draw but at a more relaxed pace. I'm genuinely surprised at myself because of the drawing speed I currently have??? So I wanna make the most of that!
