Eh, I suppose? I mean, I think by the time one is in college those sorts of things start to disperse and become less relevant. But still I feel one can look at a person and generally tell what crowds they'd be involved in normally. Though to add to that, of course loads of people will have surprising facts about them you wouldn't be able to get unless if you got to know them.
Oh, how nice it would be to be in a place where people are actually maturing. (I think the problems I saw in high school got worse where I am lol)

I was thinking about all of these and I thought that they all sound so grand... and then I realized the title of the game. Of course it's grand. My favorite out of the bunch was probably Day of Raining Tears. Simplistic, yet still gets across it's message.
Are the songs you put up general tracks? Or were they all used for special situations?
Ahaha, that's a funny way of justifying it. I'm not too sure how grand the OST as a whole is. It's very possible I just like epic stuff, so it was my bias factoring in.
I'm not too sure what you mean by general tracks. It depends on the song, I suppose?
-The Grand Battle Theme is often remixed to fit with the theme of a character/place. Here's a very long video that compiles pretty much every instance of it. If you want, you can use the timestamps in a comment to sample. So you could say this theme recurs a lot, but as a base of sorts for other themes.
-BB Channel is the theme of a character called BB who debuts as the final boss/welfare Servant of the S.E.R.A.P.H. event, so it tends to show up when she does as well as for other characters of the same face and vibe ("and" is important there, as there are a lot of Sakurafaces). You might have noticed the dark remix of her theme in the above Grand Battle video. (:
-Map themes are those that show up while you're playing the map in question, so they're the general themes of Singularities or Lostbelts, I guess.
-The Ravaging Myth is a boss-specific theme.
-"Witch Trials" debuted in Salem but has since then been used in scenarios to evoke a sense of dread/terror. Because that's what feeling it's associated with. Let's just say its debut left a lasting impression. xD (lowkey trauma)
-"A Day of Raining Tears" is used quite often during specific emotional scenes, but I think the people writing the story take care not to use it overly often. It's associated with some pretty iconic scenes that are probably spoilered in the comments section. There are other sad OST, like "Ever-Lasting Feelings (Kienai Omoi)" from the Fate/stay night visual novel (the Fate franchise makes use of remixes a lot for nostalgic/thematic purposes), but I can't find a short version of the F/GO variant.
-"Coronation" is a map theme that unlocks after a certain section of story, though it also appears in story. I think I'd describe it as a sub-arc theme for Lostbelt 6.
I found a playlist of a Lot of songs that F/GO uses, but 1-27 contains most of what I think you might be asking about. Some of them are map themes too, though. Here's the link:

I like it when exclusive tracks stay around. I remember once there was a fight in one of the video games I played. It was a standard difficulty fight, but it had a competently unique track that was to never show again, and I wish it had, you know?

True, Idk what really counts as grand or not myself. I'm just saying how I think it feels. Maybe from my perspective most of the osts I've listened to just don't have the same feel.

Ah thank you very much. I think my favorites out of the ones you selected were Chaldea Security Org (5) and Dark Clouds to Clear (19)
So many of these sound so fantasy-like, like I'm about to hop onto trek on a new journey with an adventuring party lol.
I'm pretty sure you see what I'm doing now. Go: thinly veiled opportunist!
You know, when it comes to music, I realize most of the tracks I have saved can be quite emotional, but they usually hold more negative emotion rather than positive. I'd love to add some more happy, lighthearted, comical, even romantic instrumental tracks to my pool. Do you have any up your sleeve? I feel like I'm more asking you now, instead of just the FGO soundtrack.

Aren't they? I had to quote this just to agree. xD I particularly like them for certain boss themes. Here's a spoiler heavy one. xD

Smooth as butter.
I think what you're looking for probably depends on genre. I do apologise for the huge delay in response btw, just 'cause I've been thinking on what I can offer. As you can probably guess, I don't listen to a lot of songs that fit the descriptors provided, but I can list some possibly bad ideas for consideration.
-When I think of the mood a tune evokes, I often think about factors like what's present in it. For instance, what instruments are used? Is singing present, and if so, how can that singing be described? (Maybe notes tend to be higher on average in happier songs, for instance.) Just listing things for you to consider in case you expose yourself to a greater variety of instruments and can pinpoint details like these, which could help narrow down your search. For me, I think I attribute happier songs to orchestras and choirs compared to songs where there are more solos or where there is just a single singer. There are also instruments that have more weight to them/tend to sound more sombre than ones with lighter tones.
Another thing is I think light novels might have a larger collection of happy music, mostly because funny/happy/fluffy moments are more so their piece of cake. Transitions go go!
-Romantic music: Sounds like VNs' piece of cake. Of course there's also the genre thing I mentioned, but I'm most familiar with these. From what I can tell, different visual novels specialise in different areas, like horror, fantasy, romance, maybe all of them. It doesn't just go with romance, but linking Fate/stay night's (VN version) OST here: I think it showcases the greater variety of emotions evoked, and since they're supposed to be paired with reading, maybe they also go along with writing. As a note though, I feel like if you ever do read the actual VN, then parts of your own writing might feel weird in comparison. If you feel something similar, then this method might not work as well.
Similarly, here's F/sn's 2006 anime OST:
-Romantic music part 2: Not to brag, but Chinese music is the best of the best imo when it comes to professing profound emotions. (I wanna say profound positive emotions, but uh, idk.) Like love! Yearning! Other words I cannot think words for! (: Like English pop music (or what I know of it anyways), love is a big focus (whether towards a person or towards the larger world), and sometimes it might be a lil tragic. But I personally prefer songs that are more simple. I'm not too sure if you like it or vibe with it without having grown up with it, though, so I'll just put two very unrepresentative samples here. Both are rather traditional Chinese style, but they also are more somber than what you're asking for and have lyrics. I dunno if you can work with lyrics in the background.
-"Juan Ju Lian (Raised Pearl Curtain)" by Huo Zun (who also came up with the tune):
-"Da Yu (Big Fish and Begonia)" by Zhou Shen (周深): This is the song that propelled him to fame, and he makes a lot of covers too. If you're interested, do look him up!
Instrumentally speaking, I really like the erhu and guzheng personally.
-Erhu sample:
-Guzheng sample:
I feel like a part of the “issue” in how hard it can be to find lighthearted, happy, and funny music is that those tend to accompany moments in writing. Think how out of place laugh tracks would feel without jokes. That’s why I’m bringing up VNs above, since the music can kinda serve as a sort of cue, similar to the role of a laugh track. The only example I can think of that I can actually find is this one:
(F/GO has a very iconic one that plays during humorous moments, but I can’t find it for the life of me.)
As for my very unbiased recommendation, I’ve been playing Sky: Children of the Light after Ash recommended it way back, and I think some of the OST does really really well at provoking emotions other than just, y’know, sadness and tragedy. I’m not very well-versed (haha) in music myself because I apparently have a certain taste that YouTube just caters to, but I’ll recommend it as a whole even if it doesn’t fit the prompting.
Another work to bring up: Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. It has a lot of atmospheric tracks, but idk how easy they are to find because I don’t know any of their names. Lol. I’ll just list two examples:

Words can sting and whatnot.

I think I've talked about the game a few times. It's Divinity Original Sin 2. Here's the track:
It's rather simple:
This plays during a slightly aquatic battle. As in characters are like standing in taller waters and stuff while fighting iirc. I would think it would be a nice alternative track that plays sometimes when the battle takes place nearby the ocean. But it's only during one very specific battle and that's it.
Actually, now that I think about it, there's another track that's similar to this: I think this track specifically plays only in tavern brawls. Which probably happen only once or twice for a playthrough. At least this one makes sense when it comes to when it plays.
Now that I think about it, while D:OS2's music is mostly just ok in my opinion, it uses a lot of musical motifs and alternates of the same songs. I think for most main battle songs there's like... 5 different versions of the same thing? That's a lot of work.
Chatting about music:
I only heard a few tracks from the f/sn VN (idk it was a VN) and the anime OST, and I'm liking what I hear so far! I was thinking of mostly using VN music since it's meant to go with reading. The only thing was that the VNs I have under my belt either don't fit the genre (Paranormasight) or had a soundtrack that is kinda mid 70% of the time (Stella of the End). I'll most def be using this as a resource. Thanks!
I'm sure Chinese music has a much stronger effect on you than it does me due to culture and language barrier, but I can appreciate it for sure. I like Da Yu (Big Fish and Begonia)! I know the singing is supposed to be taking the center stage, but I liked all the instruments that surrounded and complimented the voice too. The instrumentals are also nice, however I don't think they'll often fit the genres I'm writing ha.
But no, I 100% get what you mean with the "issue" that laugh track analogy is pretty accurate imo. For me at least, I used the music tracks as cues as well with my limited experience with VNs. Also taking this Tsukihime track. It feels weird saying "yeah this may be helpful in the future" without even really thinking when it will come in handy since as you said, it's basically like a laugh track.
I haven't done too much digging into Sky Children of the Light OST, but from the singular track I've heard, I think I have a perfect place for it's style of music.
Same with Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. As a side tangent, I feel the two tracks you gave me are some tracks that hit wayyy harder if you know the context, I'm guessing? Oh, and also I found a playlist with all of them. So that's good (but 116 tracks is a lot 😭)
Anyways, thanks for digging for me. You might not think it, but I think this actually helped me out a lot! I could try and give some recommendations of my own. Like you, I don't have a lot of songs that fit the descriptors I previously put up, but what are you looking for?

Apparently the singer (Zhou Shen) was nervous because he knew this song was his chance, and he kept on doing takes he didn't like, so he ended up going under his covers and singing it there lol.
I personally freaking love instrumentals, but I do a horrible job of sorting them out when there are vocal bits, so I end up having to search them up myself. It's kinda like getting two songs for one and it's pretty neat.

I hecking love Sky's OST. For VNs, I already mentioned that knowing the OST in context might ruin the story experience, but for COTL (Sky: Children of the Light) I think that if you play through the game first (the main story), the music will become more impactful afterwards, and it won't feel weird. So I highly recommend exploring the world through the main story at least. If you get hooked to the community/setting, then that's a time commitment, but if you just want to immerse yourself in the experience temporarily (at least for the time being), I think it might be a good way to get the benefits on both sides. Take this as a double recommendation to play the game haha.

Anyways this is totally random but what do you think about "spoiling" music for games and shows? Kind of. Basically, it's a funny catchphrase from a Higurashi character (Rika Furude).
I'm kinda a stickler when it comes to some types of spoiling. I get on Echo's case a lot for how he voluntarily spoils himself for what happens in F/GO, for instance. That's because as a "writer"/reader I'm aware how much works goes into the execution of an idea. When a story is summarised/spoiled, you get the essence of what happens, sure, but at the same time (most of) the experience is taken away, at least in my view.
So anyways, the above is the context for my answer that I tend to be against "spoiling" music, though there are exceptions. I'm kinda a hypocrite in this area because I tend to get into series because of their music, so like anime OPs and EDs, but that also goes into the exceptions category because I don't think OPs and EDs typically spoil many significant moments or ideas (unless they're tailored to specific episodes). All in all it just culminates in me trying not to share music that contributes a lot towards a moment in the story, theme, etc., just in case the person I am talking to might watch the series or play through the game themselves. But I don't hold others to the same standard if I'm asking for a recommendation, and overall it's very specific. I tend to judge songs by my interpretation of how important they are, for example, rather than classify a whole group and make it so that I wouldn't link them as part of a recommendation. It depends a lot.

Usually I prefer avoiding music tracks of games and shows or whatever, as I consider them spoilers and they won't have as strong as an effect if I've already heard them. That is of course if I intend on spending my time experiencing the story fully and I actually am invested in it. I dislike even if I hear that "oh btw this custom song plays at this point in time" because sometimes, you're not expecting a special soundtrack moment or whatever, and that adds a lot to the experience as well. But I feel in this day in age, it is quite hard to achieve that.
There have been stories where I was first introduced to them via song or ost. I think that's usually fine. Because that's just another vector for getting into a story. It's practically the same thing as seeing a character you like and asking where they are from. Though I notice that actually for me, these types of songs are like, usually OPs or Theme songs of games, and they're meant to be the first of the soundtrack that you listen to, so that's fine.
But uhhh while I should go digging for songs for you, I realize lots of the songs in my list are story heavy songs so uhhhh idk how you feel about that 💀

Yes, both are by the same writer and are murder mysteries. They're super popular too.

Dw about it, honestly I probably won't get around to experiencing a lot of the stories connected to those tracks, but if you don't feel right recommending them, I can always just wait for YouTube recommendations to work its magic. It hasn't disappointed me so far.
Which also leads me to asking a similar question as the above, where do you get your music recommendations? Do people IRL give you recommendations ever?

Music. Easy. Because with music can't search up a something like a character's name name on the internet and then get "[CHARACTER NAME] death scene".
So, how do I do it? Well usually like what you do. I think a lot of people have the same strategy as well. Turtle up concerning the topic/story at hand until you've caught up or things die down. Though I should actually improve my ability to do that tho.

Usually when people ask about what music I listen to, I say "I barely listen to music" because
1: It's true
2: My music taste is probably not their style
It usually prevents a lot of music recommendations then and there. Unfortunately. But even past that, I usually prefer digging on my own if I ever really want to. I know what I want more than anyone else.
See, I get much of my music from story media. A large portion of it is video game OSTs, but I would say I have a few tracks from other pieces as well. I don't actually know a thing about music, so I just work with what I know. Not that I'm askance from learning something new, it's more like music from story based media are, surprise, more directed for telling stories. Or that's at least my impression.
Feel free to prove me wrong, as I said, I actually don't know anything about music. I mean, I know popular artists, but I don't really listen to their tracks, which is already pretty alienating enough.
Plus I know for sure to NOT play video game OSTs in public. That stuff can be good, but it is NOT made for the public to hear.

Ha, no shot he was. From my perspective, TTRPGs are a very niche hobby. It's super common to bring it up and others in the convo don't even know what it is. I don't really know how to convey it, but what I'm trying to say is that while I don't know bro, he has no right to judge people not wanting to get into TTRPGs. TTRPGs are not a hobby where you can stand all high and mighty over someone else for not playing for many reasons.
But can I ask, and sorry if this sounds doubtful, but could you be overthinking? Or is this a "for sure"?

Music. Easy. Because with music can't search up a something like a character's name name on the internet and then get "[CHARACTER NAME] death scene".
What about "[CHARACTER NAME] Death Theme - [Series Name] OST"? I've seen that a lot. Also thumbnails of a character I can barely recognise visibly giving their last smile along with covers.

Makes sense. IRL, people ask me what I listen to too, but music preferences don't tend to be a connector between us. I've noticed a lot of people I talk to like--surprise surprise--popular music.
On a tangent btw, is it just me or are the same songs played at the same events since a decade ago?? Is it that way for where you've been? 'Cause it is for me, and I cannot escape it.

I don't think I could prove you wrong. xD
You listen to stuff on speakers? I rarely play videos in "public," maybe 'cause rn I can retreat to my dorm for videos. But I usually use earbuds anyways.

Bro admitted to it. He thought it's weird I'd rather post/write roleplaying stuff than do it on the spot. Love how your impression of me is how much I overthink. xD
It was kinda just a friendly new acquaintance kind of judging tho. I mean, I was able to find out within a bit of talking that he really really likes armour and mecha. So I judged him right back along with the shared friend that introduced us to each other, who was scrolling through fanart of a character and saving some of them to their phone shamelessly. lol
I think you might've taken this part a bit seriously lol xD, did you happen to know someone who's pushy about TTRPGs or something??

HELL NO. Blasting music like nobody's business while walking around is such a garish choice. I mean I get playing it when you're in a group, and you all are hanging out at like, say the beach or something, but just blasting it on your own or while walking around is not the move.
But anyways, I mean do NOT put tell the DJ at the party to play that stuff, or play it during an event. Cuz while it do be banging, it is not meant for normal people ears I can assure that.

I'm not exactly sure about what you mean by pushy, but I'm pretty sure there isn't really anyone who's pushy irl.
It's more just me and my altered perspective of the world. Also the word judging usually has a negative connotation associated with it at least for me, so I that's why I took it more seriously.

I don't make song requests either. But anyways I do not play an instrument nor do I sing. I think picking up an instrument would be cool, but I think I need to work on myself before branching myself out, or else I'd be stretching too thin.

That's understandable, people always have different perspective on things. I feel like we have different perspectives/definitions for nearly everything we bring up. Or at least it comes up very often.

I'm finding the definitions thing pretty much why no one can agree with each in philosophy. xD
On a slightly different topic, can I ask if characters had actual faces in that X-COM run you did a while back? Trying to design Urdim for real lol, so if they do I could use that as a fun lil reference.

I legit don't remember the face I picked for Urdim, I don't know if the save even really exists anymore😔
Idk if I downloaded mods for more diverse faces or not either. Cuz XCOM got some goofy ahh faces (you wouldn't want them for reference)

The suits equipment I think was pretty standard. Like bullet proof vests and whatnot. But I do think I made some parts a bit more sci fi - such as grieves and gauntlets, which are straight metal. Think ODST gear. I think maybe later on I switched out the vests for chest plates after (which was just a purely visual thing). Think also ODST gear for the chest plate.
Ok, I think I should finally do this... most of these songs are from games and such, as IRL, I barely listen to music. Usually they are chosen for sparking imagination in my storytelling. They probably won't hit as hard I can give you extra context if you want, but I'm just gonna do a little because you mentioned your stance on spoilers. But If it comes from a game, I'll mention it if it catches your eye.
Starting off with a sad one (and a classic): Ständchen by Shubert. - Game of Origin (or where I first heard it from): Signalis.
Classic quite literally. You play this, and I will hit the Shinji in the chair bro not kidding. It may sound like some just ordinary classical music but it hurts like a cannonball. Not bringing the game version over here because that's spoilers. The most depressing yet beautiful story I have ever played. It's not sad for the sake of being sad, characters are not suffering because people like seeing characters get angst. It's just a tragic story.
Ok how about something else now: Compass - Mili - Game of origin: Limbus Company
Since Project Moon is a game company I am currently following, I ought to include some tracks on it.
Here's another version I think is cool because it's more thematic:
Don't check comments, spoilers. This one I think can be pretty obvious about what the singer is talking about...? And who it is talking about for that matter if you remember my Limbus writings.
both of those were sort of depressing, but here's something more jumpy: It's Going Down Now - Game of Origin: Persona 3 Reload
STRAIGHT BALLIN. I don't know if you've heard this one or not, it's pretty popular because it comes from a popular anime game series. Tangent, but I don't like the Persona series due to strong silent protagonist syndrome, but the only game I'd eye up playing is Persona 3 (Reload). I've liked what I've seen in terms of characters and stories and stuff. Ignoring the silent protag for the most part. Oh, what do you mean one of the most important characters is a robot girl that learns about emotions??? I totally didn't know that.
We slowing down again with this one: Bells of Laguna Bend - Paul Leonard-Morgan - Game of Origin: Cyberpunk 2077
Slow and peaceful. I really loved the scene when this played. Reminiscing and reflecting. It probably sounds boring on it's own, but it's pretty nice.
Another side tangent - They Cyberpunk universe is got to be one of my favorite universes out there. Pretty epic with the worldbuilding and everything. I really gotta find myself a table to play in the tabletop at some point.
MAJOR CRIMES - HEALTH & Window Weather - Game of Origin: Cyberpunk 2077
Epic song with thematic songs and stuff idk. Just chose it cuz I like it.
I decided to send only 5 in to make sure you're cool with what you're hearing, then I'll send in some more. If you want, I'd like to see what you think about these songs. They usually have some story relevance or meaning to a specific character(s)

I'm imagining SS Urdim getting his Gold Cloth absolutely shattered, only for it to all break apart onto the ground, revealing a standard bullet proof vest.
Context for why this is so freaking funny to me: The Gold Cloths are supposed to be unbreakable unless you're dealing with the gods. I,,, xD.
Anyways, thank you for describing all this. I might draw the meme of Urdim wearing another suit of armour under his standard suit of armour (his Cloth) one day, I think it'd be hilarious. (ngl the ODST helmet covers more than the manga Capricorn helmet, I think he maybe should wear that instead lol)
Btw did you customize your Commander character or was Urdim pretty much the only customized guy around? (The real question: Did my guy have any friends 3: )

Understandable, context is very important. But I think it's cool to hear something before knowing the context, because later on that means you might be able to see how right or wrong you were or add onto your insight on what the creator (like the songwriter) might have been trying to do. I think when I hear something for the first time, my interpretation can be a bit too blatantly obvious for my own liking at times.

I can't actually remember if you wanted me to give my reaction, but I assume that's why I held off responding for so long? (edit: wow I could have just scrolled down and read xD)
I kinda feel like maybe even the original version has some backstory to it that I don't know, so it's lessening the impact. Is there any such thing or am I just uncivilized?
Can I ask if the context is like a theme for one character, a pair of characters, or more than 2? Asking this 'cause I know a lot of songs that are intended for two characters, and while I can't tell if this one is one such example, maybe it's that sort of song with certain portions intended to be from the perspective of one, or intended as a response to another portion, etc. Like maybe the violin and piano are intended to be from different perspectives...? Idk how wrong I am being though lol.
Off topic, but I do kinda find it funny how the West loves its tragedies so much, while China seems to kinda just like the symbolic impact of them (and extend the stories in future analogies for happier endings). Mentioning the pair thing reminded me of some songs that are romantic and/or tragic with pairs. Love and tragedy really do come hand in hand everywhere it seems.
Postscript (idk what to call this): I googled the song on Wikipedia and wow I think I was wrong, lovely song though. xD

You and Specter mentioning Limbus Company reminds me how I've been seeing Mili songs pop up on my feed since forever.
Beginning of the first iteration reminded me of this F/GO event OST: (as a note, it's not the same through the whole video)
I think the similarity is good since the character is supposed to be ocean-themed somewhat, I think, hopefully.
Spooky vibes. I actually wasn't expecting the direction the song was headed. I was just like, "Oh, spooky...though I thought Time said this was somewhat depressing?" Actually, it reminds me a lot of a sub-genre of Chinese pop songs where the girl in a relationship has finally broken up with someone/ended a toxic relationship and is triumphantly breaking free, except this song feels much more mixed than just that. The lyrics by themselves seem a bit triumphant at first, but the way they're being sung doesn't really match that, and the song doesn't really have an end, which fits with the character whose perspective is being sung sailing out to sea (which I do hope is what is being conveyed).
Hoping this very mysterious character whose identity I definitely do not know buon voyage. This song sounds like she has it tough lol.

It's kinda interesting that it's apparently battle OST or something. I'm so used to F/GO (and Awakening ig) that I couldn't place where this would be put in a game.
What do you think of Undertale's protag? Iirc they're a silent protagonist. (I don't actually remember if you've played this)

I like how you narrate the music sharing. The narration makes the order feel intentional. Is it? It wouldn't surprise me since I know you have a lot of tabletop RPing experience, and so probably a lot of stuff you do is rather intentional.
Oh, also on my own side tangent, I find the thumbnails of the music we share funny, because I feel like most of these songs have a sort of thumbnail that I usually don't see on my feed, which is cool. xD Is it the same for you? I kinda made an effort to find non-spoilery/more general thumbnails so idk how much they pop out. Similarly, I don't know if you did something like that either. (you don't have to obviously, I'm just ramblin')
This song actually reminds me of this one game that I watched a bit of gameplay of. It was post-apocalyptic and you used a cat to navigate around. Stray iirc. I actually really love ambient soundtracks. I can't always play them because my brain can get bored of them if all I listen to are those (similarly I can't listen to compilations of the same singers for long because I get bored fast), but I don't see ambient music as being boring on its own.
Do you ever listen to white noise? I hear some people do it to sleep. I don't usually have problems falling asleep, plus I don't have a habit of having my phone/earbuds out next to me before going to bed, so I don't do anything of the sort. Reminded me of that though.
As you can probably tell, I write to ambient soundtracks a lot in a rambling sort of fashion, so this reply is very long and random xD.

I hope there isn't anything too epic in the video 'cause it's flashing a bit too much for me to be able to stare at the screen with the tab open. However, I love quiet epic songs. I don't come across them often tho.
This being from the same universe as the previous song is really cool, too, even if for me it's just for the sake of variety. Is it a character theme? I don't know the thematic ideas, so I can't tell if the lyrics are for one specific character or a scene/pivotal moment or something.
Also, is it a coincidence, or do you happen to like the plot of a character overcoming a past relationship and moving on? I think this song and "Compass" both seem to have that idea, but I didn't know if it was by chance or not, since you're picking out music rather than the associated story (I'm assuming).
I decided to send only 5 in to make sure you're cool with what you're hearing, then I'll send in some more. If you want, I'd like to see what you think about these songs. They usually have some story relevance or meaning to a specific character(s)
I'm super cool with these! I just dawdled for so long because I wanted to write out some sort of response that felt fitting. I still dunno about fitting, but I really did try. I've been online this entire time hoping to sound coherent if that means anything xD.
I wasn't able to react much to all of the songs because I'm stronger in reacting with context, but all in all I think these songs are all probably really strong in fulfilling their purpose in their proper context. I think they all convey a very specific, non-generic atmosphere. It's kinda unfortunate that I can't know all of their context, but there's always gonna be stuff I don't know so I guess I'm giving up on knowing first xD. For example, you might just call a song sad to avoid spoilers, but even without context, I feel like I can feel the difference in the emotions conveyed by "Compass" versus "Standchen", for instance. And even the simpler tracks (like "epic" tracks) feel like they have their layers.
Please do feel free to keep sending songs my way, and if you'd like for me to reply in a more specific way, please do let me know as well! Thanks for this time though :D

I lowkey forgot how you like posts to be spaced out lol, sorry. Please let me know for the future if you have a preference (I specialise in walls of text)
My turn! But I can't actually remember most of the songs I've been listening to so it's kinda all similar lol. Whoopsie. (sorry)
"Kishi Ou No Hokori" ("Pride of the King of Knights" from Fate/stay night, by Kawai Kenji)
I think this theme is so beautiful on its own that it doesn't really count as a spoiler. Plus I think I can bet money that you won't watch the 2006 anime. Unless you will. In which case I think listening to this on its own is still more impactful and so I'm posting it anyways. xD It has its pretty and impactful moments, but honestly? I feel like this theme is great while on its own. Furthermore, this might sound sappy, but I also think that this reflects Artoria Pendragon's character. Just like her, this theme stands strong on its own and conveys the pride of the king of knights even without a moving scene to accompany and support it.
Also I hope I didn't send this already, but I just love it so much.
Erhu cover:
(I love the Erhu)
"sand dream" by Yuki Kajiura & Revo
Similar to you, I am sending this song only because I really like it. Also, as a fun fact, the lyrics do not have actual meaning. Kajiura does that on purpose so the words don't interfere with the listener's interpretation of the song as a whole.
I think it's very atmospheric. It's not from an anime from what I can tell though. It's just part of an album. So in the end, this is just a very open-ended note.
"Sis Puella Magica!" by Yuki Kajiura
Same composer, but with an anime this time. The anime name is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Or just Madoka Magica. It's getting a new movie this year's winter and I'm hyped even though I still need to watch all the other movies lol.
Idk if it's your cup of tea (it wasn't Echo's lol, he called it boring and quit watching before the end and I am still hurt by this fact), but I personally would recommend. Plus I hecking love the music. I'm not exactly making a good case here but I digress. xD
Also, I don't think it's a spoiler so that's why I'm sharing it.
"Der Hexenkönig" ("The Witch King") by Lappy (from Arknights)
Fun fact: Lappy is a fan composer for Arknights, and this is their first official piece.
Fun fact 2: I don't play Arknights either (I have it downloaded but lol), so I'm hoping this isn't a big spoiler!
Incidentally, the song is a remix of "Der Erlkönig" by Schubert (:
What a coincidence, huh?
"Recall" by Yuki Hayashi (from Arknights)
I'm personally lowkey traumatized by this piece because I was using it as fuel for some stuff from the SS AU lol. But it's a really pretty song, very atmospheric imo as well.
"Tierra Sagrada" ("Holy Land") from Saint Seiya: Awakening
It's the same song on loop for like 28 minutes, but I've used it for writing a few times. I really like the overall ambience of this song. It doesn't feel monotone to me, and it doesn't really invoke SS themes for me, but it's just so nice and tranquil without being dull. Feel free to just stop at some point, I just thought I'd share lol.
"Zanya Gensou" by Spiral Ladder (from Fate/Samurai Remnant)
Lastly, some F/SR propaganda (not really, I just like the song).
It's literally the opening theme so I should be good. Plus it has cool visuals!
I thought I'd end on something that's a bit more epic, since a lot of this feels kinda similar to me. I hope you like it though! Feel free not to commentate much though.
Thanks again for sharing your songs and for bearing with this,,, uhhh two months+ waiting period.

I mean I totally understand the feeling of a lessened impact. If I had not played Signalis, I probably would have skipped past this song and just wrote it off.
You mentioning that you looked stuff up on wikipedia made me look further in depth for it as well. Man is it hard to find a page that is exclusively recording [Schubert - Swan Song "Schwanengesang" D.957 No.4, Ständchen] Or the page that I found was relatively small. Anyways It most definitely is a theme for a pair of characters, specifically lovers (I think that's pretty obvious already though if you look into the lyrics). My interpretation of it is that it's some tragedy on love and longing, which you already touched on ha. But yeah, people love their tragedies.

You and Specter mentioning Limbus Company reminds me how I've been seeing Mili songs pop up on my feed since forever.
I never really got Mili songs until I started playing Limbus Company, but I really enjoy some of the lyrics they put into their songs. I did hear that Mili tries to tell stories in their songs too, so its nice to hear them. Though like you said, it's sort of hard to interpret them without their context or knowledge of the series.

Huh that's nice. Cool. I always like the addition of layers as things get more intense. That's always fun. I'm guessing this is also a water based theme, so I like how it sounds initially sounds like a radar with it's single blip.
GalaxianExplosion wrote:
Hmmm I didn't think of it like this. The fact that it doesn't really have defined end and just ebbs end probably has to also do with the fact that VGOSTs have to be loopable, but I really like the idea that the song end the way it does because its saying the character's journey doesn't end here, and it goes on. I didn't really notice the triumphant lyrics + differing tone? The initial thought when it comes to the tone in the beginning is like some sort of gritty determination trying to push forwards.
On that note, I do think most Sinners, or for that, any City resident has it tough.

There's some kind of tonal whiplash for sure xD
It's kinda interesting that it's apparently battle OST or something. I'm so used to F/GO (and Awakening ig) that I couldn't place where this would be put in a game.
What do you think of Undertale's protag? Iirc they're a silent protagonist. (I don't actually remember if you've played this)
I figured I should give a tonal whiplash as a pallet cleanser or whatever ha. But yest this is battle OST, specifically SEES Team Advantage, aka: the good guys are winning.
I think Undertale having a silent protag is fine. I've never played Undertale, it's far too big to not know stuff about it. Frisk is fine because as far as I recall, Frisk isn't meant to be some super charismatic leader or something. They're just meant to be a kid. Compare that to Persona protags. They're usually the leader of a group of Persona users that are trying to bring change to the world. Now I know there are many different types of leaders, but Persona protags are usually viewed as the "beacon of shining hope with unbreakable character" in their teams. Everyone looks up to them, everyone likes them, and everyone says they're so strong and powerful. But what has the protagonist really done to earn such respect? Sure, he may be powerful, but during times of emotional distress with individual team members, he at most he says like, 4 words of encouragement that anyone can think of, and then the character he is talking to is all like, *gasp* "Wow why didn't I think of that? That's why you're our leader. So strong. I wish I could be like you."
It makes no sense. Most Persona protags don't have that charisma nor personality to be that type of leader. I'd rather see an actual character with personality instead of a quiet and 80% emotionless blank that is meant to be a self-insert for players. Now I have heard characters like Persona 4 protag Yu Narukami has a lot more personality in the anime, but that is besides the point. Oh, and also to clarify I'm talking about Persona 3-5.
I know you asked about my thoughts on Undertale, but instead you got Persona, but there you have it.

Ok it is true that I intentionally ordered these songs, but don't try to butter me up and all saying it's due to experience or whatever. I did that just because I think it would be nice for a better flow. I think when you introduce things to people you don't just throw things to the wind.
But anyways. Yeah I know Stray. I've heard good things about it but I've never played it.
I don't listen to white noise. I also do not have any trouble with falling asleep.

Oh yeah no worries there isn't anything epic. Just that same glitching animation over and over. Honestly, it isn't really fun for the eyes either, I agree. Good thing I just usually tab out of those while working on something else.
What do you mean by quiet epic songs? As in songs that have like, a softer singer with some stronger instruments or something?
If I recall, it's not really a character theme, though it's one of the more popular tracks. It was used in Cyberpunk Edgerunners too. I think its pretty good for describing the main character in Cyberpunk 2077 as well. The story being that they're trying to trying to find a way cure themselves of what is essentially an incurable disease while fighting through countless conspiracies of lowlives and megacorps.
I do like the the thumping noises at the beat drop when they sing "Life's short", around 2:00. I interpreted as gunfire, since the Cyberpunk world is filled with lots of violence and crime.
GalaxianExplosion wrote:
Also, is it a coincidence, or do you happen to like the plot of a character overcoming a past relationship and moving on? I think I do, yes. Facing and overcoming the past. That sounds really general, but it's fun to handle.

Yeah, that's what lack of context be like. It's unfortunate, but still as you mentioned, listing to them without influence can provide insight to others that have listened with context. That or you compare the before and after for context.

Oh, that's actually a pretty good way to look at it. I'll take that up whenever I am "spoiled" on a song. As to games that are NOT live service. I would have to know your tastes and see if we align. Oh well, as you know, I like sweet and salty. Sour and bitter are not for me. Texture-wise I think I like crunchy, but that doesn't apply to noodles, which are noodley, y'know.
(I don't actually know my taste, but I've only played free games so far xD)
I guess I have some loose criteria that maybe apply?
-Good story that I can reread without having to pay currency or something (you might laugh but in F/GO you can access the soundtrack in the game only by buying it with materials, so maybe somewhere out there rereading story is not free)
-I like fighting games (I like action and fantasy as you probably know)
-But I can't do first-person perspective. It makes me nauseous. I can usually watch videos of it for some reason (at least for longer periods without getting sick), but I can't do the controls myself
-This isn't really a criteria per se, but I think I have some inner preferences for character design, but I don't know how to specify on this. It's kinda related to how some people can get really triggered on armour for girls (how impractical the designs tend to be, with high heels, open chest areas, etc.). I'm kinda like that--I like a touch of realism to designs in connection with the setting/world of the work--but it's not as simple as that. For example, I wouldn't have played F/GO if not for the fact that the story was said to be good (and I had some experience with previous works in the franchise to know that the claim might hold true for me), or else the fanservice would have kept me away. Arknights also has a very nice aesthetic, and I heard the game isn't very time-consuming, but I'm not a big fan of the outfits. Similarly, Genshin apparently has a good story, but it's very time-consuming and I don't really like the designs there.
-I really really love thematic ideas that are developed well. I don't care if I don't agree (though please nothing like "act-ually murdering your family for no reason is NOT evil!!" I think I could read an article on that only).
-Also I have a bias for beautiful scenery, so if that appears in CGs or as maps or whatever that's also an instant win
I really started talking about my vague preferences for character design. I apologise, but honestly I haven't played many games, so I don't really know how to answer an inquiry on my taste in games. It kinda applies for everything tbh, I don't watch many things.
How about we just talk generally about your favorites? I know you play Limbus Company, but what other games have you enjoyed? I'm particularly interested in maybe some old favorites of yours that you played when you were little or something and still hold in high regard. Kinda like how SS is my first anime and I like it a lot, but I probably wouldn't have chosen to watch it if it weren't something important for my mom. Are there any games like that for you? Or maybe any that you have an eye on?

Idk, it's probably a personal difference. Quiet epic songs (which is probably not the best descriptor) can be listened to frequently without spiking my anxiety. Boss themes tend to fit these more. Some songs spike my heart rate up and are great, but not for looping. The difference is probably not quantifiable for anyone else.

I heard that Genshin is pretty grindy yeah. I have an irl friend that is similar enough in taste; that being high priority in character and worldbuilding, so I'll just use his ideas for my thoughts for now on the topic of Genshin. From his opinion as a player, he thought the story was mostly ok, but he felt that the worldbuilding was a bit lackluster. As in all you get for worldbuilding is just what's presented in front of you during the story, and it doesn't really go, or feel, deeper than that. But maybe he's just talking about the early chapters/arcs.
Anyways I agree that Arknight's aesthetic and art style is pretty good. I love the techware designs. Though what part of you makes you not too big of a fan of the outfits? The outfits I've seen don't really have much fanservice.
Side note - I decided to look into designs and it seems Arknights designs can vary a lot. Some of them are pretty grounded and tactical while others are pretty, y'know, anime-y

Sure, just keep in mind that I can give you some recommendations at any time.
I started building my library not too long ago, and I only recently began placing games in a more analytical light. So I guess I don't have "old favorites" that I've really played and would still recommend. I mean sure I have some nostalgic games I remember playing, like Wizard 101, but I don't remember a single thing from it storywise lol.
Signalis is pretty good. It's the only story on my list that currently has a 10/10 rating. Though that's because I really place a lot of weight on the story and I am pretty tolerant on gameplay. I'm sure lots of people don't like it because it's storage system is pretty brutal or smth. Though it's not a game I would recommend to everyone. You can just play it and ignore the story for the most part (why would you do that), but if you want to get into the story I recommend watching lore/explanation vids afterwards. I also recommend being in a healthy mental state.

The answer is we don't know (yet) though I am guessing it's a term that Faust made up. Maybe a term to describe a group of people that are always paired with each other no matter what mirror world they are in.

Hm, maybe it's how a silent protagonist that is handled that really makes me salty about Persona's silent protags. I'll look into this idea of silent protagonists soon. I won't disagree on your claim, because I think it may be true. Instead maybe silent protags require a different mixture of storytelling ingredients.
But yes I think a part of the difficulty comes from the fact Persona's protags are also leaders of the group. If the protag wasn't the leader and instead just the ace of the team, they would be a much easier character to write. Because they'd be mostly respected for something that we clearly see, and that's their fighting prowess. Maybe it's the fact that Persona protags are pretty static, and usually having a static character as your protagonist in long form storytelling situations is very disadvantageous.
Most static protagonists work better in shorter form stories that you can pick up anytime, anywhere. As an example, comic book protags are/were static, that way a reader could pick up any of the comics at anytime and not wonder why in the world is the central character acting so widely different.

Oh that makes sense. I also understand your thoughts too. Just the right song for the right time.

Oh yeah no it's not supposed to be realistic at all. But I mostly associated it not because of accuracy to the real thing, but more so due to the choppiness of the sound and the fact they say "life's short" right above it. Like, yeah, life is short if you're living a life of violence.

Is this the same friend you were talking to at the same time the server brought up the topic?
I remember seeing some people talking about how in Genshin there barely seems to be immigrants from other regions or, in general, international discourse (regions talking about other regions), but I kinda just chalked it to worldbuilding being hard.

Apparently the designs that I've seen leaned towards things that I don't like. I discovered through considering the topic that I seemingly have something against people who have to fight/be involved in action wearing shorts. xD
It also turned out the number of characters who wear high heels were overrepresented in the designs I saw. The footwear seems pretty practical overall.
Last but not least, I think maybe I got spoiled by F/GO using so many different artists, and so the very similar art style for all characters that lends to Arknights' aesthetic simultaneously made the designs seem duller to me. Part of it is still true though, the faces are more typically anime-ish than F/GO, though maybe it really is just stylistic difference.
The funny thing about Arknights is that I literally never see it talked about or advertised, so honestly my starting opinion on the designs is less negative than anticipated. But at this point, although I dunno what it is, I do still prefer F/GO's character design. Maybe the fact F/GO characters are based on characters/people who already exist give the designers a leg up or something?

Signalis is pretty good. It's the only story on my list that currently has a 10/10 rating. Though that's because I really place a lot of weight on the story and I am pretty tolerant on gameplay. I'm sure lots of people don't like it because it's storage system is pretty brutal or smth. Though it's not a game I would recommend to everyone. You can just play it and ignore the story for the most part (why would you do that), but if you want to get into the story I recommend watching lore/explanation vids afterwards. I also recommend being in a healthy mental state.
Why wouldn't you recommend it to everyone? Is it niche or something?
Also, I noticed Signalis and Limbus Company are both horror games. Do you happen to like the genre, or is it a coincidence?
Story-skippers are another race fr, I could never. I can't even skip bad event stories from F/GO (I mean not that they occur often, but probably the worst one I've seen did just end recently).

Hm, maybe it's how a silent protagonist that is handled that really makes me salty about Persona's silent protags. I'll look into this idea of silent protagonists soon. Great, maybe I'll remember to follow up with you on it.
Time wrote:
But yes I think a part of the difficulty comes from the fact Persona's protags are also leaders of the group. If the protag wasn't the leader and instead just the ace of the team, they would be a much easier character to write. Because they'd be mostly respected for something that we clearly see, and that's their fighting prowess. Maybe it's the fact that Persona protags are pretty static, and usually having a static character as your protagonist in long form storytelling situations is very disadvantageous.
Funnily enough, I think I'm very used to protags being in the tactician/leader position. I think I can see what you mean, though. Leaders/commanders need to be charismatic rather than just capable, but silent protagonists have much less room to demonstrate their charm.
Also of note, I forgot what a silent protag is again, so ignore that. Arknights' protag is semi-silent, while F/GO's is probably not. I lowkey thought as long as your dialogue doesn't really make an impact then you count as a silent protag. Watch me be doubly wrong though :skull:

Most static protagonists work better in shorter form stories that you can pick up anytime, anywhere. As an example, comic book protags are/were static, that way a reader could pick up any of the comics at anytime and not wonder why in the world is the central character acting so widely different.
That's a really good point! I do wonder if "logically" speaking it's also because comic books usually have some kind of weird looping chronology. I mean, the students in them never ever graduate to the next level from what I can tell. (I do not read many comic books)

Fair. I think if I were a cosplayer I'd definitely prefer Arknights costumes in general (though some of them I'm not as sure about). As an artist maybe I like F/GO's more, especially with so many potential costumes shown in Craft Essences.
Thematically I'll give F/GO a defence in that its themes aren't supposed to be that dark, so it goes with that taste that you mentioned. Most of the Heroic Spirits are literally heroes, so of course they don't all look gloomy, or the promotion art would be hella weird. But if you look at the Avengers/Anti-Heroes, and the Alter Ego variants of usual Servants, then you get that edgy vibe. Guessing you might not like the Alter/Avenger aesthetic as much as I do though. Side note. Comparing the event's visual novel sections between and the first episodes, I can already sense that the writing team has gotten a LOT better at writing. I didn't even really have to try to pick out improvements. Like, the biggest one that I saw that that the writers actually DESCRIBED what was happening around the characters instead of just moving some sprites around screen and making noise, with characters saying what is happening.

Most of my perspective on Fate designs are that they're just eh. They're serviceable. Much of them are pretty plain. They don't really make up for it in cool factor for me either. I mean, most of them are just everyday outfits. Grounded designs can be nice, and I do have examples where I like them, but for some reason I find most of these designs not interesting. Though I think Artoria's outfit is nice. I mean, you can tell she's a swordswoman/knight by looking at her. She's probably more calmer and reserved as well normally due to her hairstyle and the blue coloring. That's about all for now. Though ofc this is my knowledge of Fate, not exactly F/GO.

(I have player bias in this, I have Extra class bias in general xD)
Yeah I guess so. I think different designs would correlate to different promotional material/tactics.
On the mention of Avengers, I looked a bit and I totally forgot seeing Oda Nobunaga's design. I like her design a lot actually. Especially when she has that big gun.
