A few years I think, iirc until Shirou was around 11, so like 5 years probably??
Anyways he died trying to get back to Illya but died at the bounded field, which he couldn't get past

And Illya never knew her father still cared for her so yeah that's why in most of the routes she starts off hating Shirou (in fact I think that's the case for all of them) but iirc in Prisma Illya Kiritsugu and Irisviel are both alive or something so they're just siblings there
