I've discovered that, while pretty much everyone when reading a story or watching a movie is asking, "why would you make them suffer like that?" Suffering creates attachment. When you see what they go through, you want them to get through it, and you become more invested in them and their story.
This is why there's so much suffering in stories, physical or mental. Not only does it make the story interesting, but it makes the characters and what they want to do seem more important and overall intruiging.

If you only base moral alignment on character creation, all (or at least the sheer majority) of character creators are evil (or neutral at best from what I've seen), so I would also disagree unless you happen to also be against law/order and have unorthodox moral standards that you go with.
