you are indeed correct they are images of character development :] they're also incredibly cheesy but that's just what this series offers
and yeah LOL his name isn't actually Mr Spoiler Man but basically there's this masked character who decides to go by "C" (his actual identity is a spoiler). The reason why I didn't call him "C" there is because there's another character who ALSO used "C" for his secret identity and so if you searched up "trails series c" I'm pretty sure you'd get the original C and not the second guy (who I'm talking about). though the original C also got his own redemption arc in an earlier game but that's a completely separate thing

Just to compare, when I start up a new playthrough, I predict that I will make a full run through the game, no matter how long. Is that the same for you? Or is it more just reliving the game once again?

Ah, that might be it. I don't have any qualms about playing longer games but very rarely do I actively start up additional playthroughs of them (ex: the Trails games. I put like 130 hrs in my first playthrough of Cold Steel 4 and though I've tried a second run I haven't really made much progress on it because I just cannot find it in me to commit to a new run, no matter how much I love that game); if I want to revisit certain parts, I'll typically search up specific scenes on YouTube or something. When I boot up a new run of Pokemon, though, I'm really just doing it for the gameplay, because that's where my fun is.

Oooh that's a really good design. And yes, there were! Many! I don't remember them too well but if I remember right there's at least a whole chapter dedicated to rope/knots. One of the interpretations I remember is how the rope is a physical reminder of how the ship crew and their fates are connected

As to the replay value...
I see, just to relive the tale again. I can somewhat get that. Yeah. While I haven't rewatched entire shows through and through or reread books all the way, I do still check out specific scenes mostly check for hidden details of get some creative inspiration. But I have not gone enough to complete a game say, 4 times, or start a new playthrough 25 times. Maybe it could also be the length of time it takes to complete a game? How long are Pokemon games and Zelda games?

Pokemon White is like, a 10 hour game maybe? Depends on how long you spend grinding. Most of my playthroughs of that game don't get past the 2-3 hour mark (what will happen is that I start a playthrough, play it for 1-2 days, and then forget about it for like 9 months and then want to restart). My most "current" one is probably the closest I've gotten to the ending in a while, I think I'm around 15 or so hours into it (I stopped right around Victory Road/pre-endgame) but that playthrough is very intentionally slower
But also yeah I do like to revisit specific scenes as well, especially with games that are on the longer end. The shear number of times I've gone back to watch particular clips from the Trails games is almost concerning (but it's still better than committing to a new 70hr long playthrough for each game)

Anyways I feel like I might give a few thoughs once I'm done with the book. Genuinely haven't been reading much this week lol but it's always a good time to pick up the book and continue reading! I agree that it's a weird read, but part of that makes it super interesting to me. I remember when reading the first chapters my thoughts were literally "Wow, the style is so interesting. I wouldn't want to write like that though. But it's still so interesting." It's definitely out of the ordinary.
I don't think that even being told that the author likes to infodump would have prepared me for that chapter which is like a whale encyclopedia 😭 although since everything is from the protagonist's pov it's more interesting to read? I do like the way his thoughts are sprinkled in between the narrative. That's fun.

LOL yeah that's exactly the chapter I was thinking about I think. As a narrator, Ishmael is incredibly interesting to think about (what does he add? what does he omit?) but I'll wait until you get further because there's some chapters that really make you go "huh" if you think about the fact that it's Ishmael who's supposed to be narrating. Also yeah Moby-Dick is such an adventure precisely because you don't know what you're getting into before it's too late

Heathcliff is from Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte! I think I'd probably get a lot more out of reading it now since admittedly 13 yr old me could not grasp what was going on thanks to the unreliable narration)

Wait, it comes in more forms than just the VN? Does it have any adaptations?

It does -- mainly, the manga and the anime. I haven't seen either yet, but general consensus is that the anime is bad (it also stops midway through the story and supposedly makes one of the main mysteries unsolvable rip), but the manga is supposed to be pretty faithful and a good adaptation

Also, yeah, exactly. Sometimes things are more about the experience; RGU and Umineko are both good examples of that

Homethreads » The Lost Library 3.0 // Autumn's Homethread » January 20, 2024 13:48:39

@Time: I'm glad it interested you enough to put it on your backlog! Also that's entirely fair -- I knew RGU was going to be a harder sell because it's really hard to talk about without delving too deep (and at that point, depending on your preferences regarding spoilers, it might ruin the experience). Admittedly I'm not much of a romance person either -- it was a friend of mine who convinced me to watch it, and the show is more a coming-of-age story than a romance to be honest. Umineko is absolutely a blast, even if it does make you go "what is even happening" every 15 minutes (fair warning though, the VN is... very long. It took me 2 years to read because I kept taking long breaks, but the VN is definitely the ideal way to experience the story your first time.)

I've been enjoying the book, and I especially like the way name references are written in pretty much in every paragraph. Right now I'm not sure if it's supposed to be for symbolism or if it's a style choice, but either way, it's interesting.

yeah LOL
glad you're enjoying it! Moby-Dick is such a weird read at times (I don't know if you've read any of the whale chapters yet but Melville loves to infodump) but it's so full of.... everything that there's so much to go through
my curse is that whenever I talk about this book I end up waxing metaphors (I blame this on my teacher because her love for this book was so infectious) but I'll keep quiet about that for now
Do let me know if you have any thoughts (+things you want to talk about) while reading! It's been 2 years since I read it but I still remember a good amount

And also I'm not Time but yup, Ishmael is a girl in Limbus Company. I never got into the game so I can't comment on her character there but she's the one character that really caught my attention and made me tempted to download the game

Homethreads » The Lost Library 3.0 // Autumn's Homethread » January 18, 2024 12:29:45

:D would be glad to

You're correct! RGU aired in the late 90s -- its art style is very indicative of that era. As for Umineko, (I had to search this up), the games came out in the late 2000s. (Though the worldwide releases were from 2016-2017). Admittedly I did not play Umineko myself (I used this playlist to read) but I think the steam version uses the original set of sprites while the console releases use a newer set of sprites have a "cleaner" style.

as for Revolutionary Girl Utena:

It's about a girl who wants to be a prince; about kids who want to break out of their coffins; about reaching an upside down castle in the sky. If that sounds strange, it is! Don't worry! Utena is very abstract at times, it's chock full of symbolism, and is absolutely brimming with subtext -- it is so, so rich, and that makes for a very mind-bending experience the first time you watch it.

More plainly, RGU follows Utena Tenjou, a girl who tries to emulate a "prince" from her past, as she is dragged into dueling members of her school's student council. The winner of the duels, it is said, will "get engaged" to the Rose Bride, a girl named Anthy Himimiya. It is said, that whoever Anthy is engaged to, they will gain the the power to bring revolution to the world. What does that mean? Who knows! (I mean..... I do. But learning the meaning behind the duels is a major part of the story.) Anthy and Utena's relationship is a huge part of the show (spoiler: they're lesbians), with how they grow as people, and learn to break free from their respective pasts through each other. It's arguably more nuanced than that, but through its characters the show tackles themes of gender, abuse, and what it really means to "save" someone.

as for Umineko: When They Cry:

It's a murder mystery.
It's also a story about witches and demons.
But it's a murder mystery.

On an island na

recently (as in, in the last month) I watched Revolutionary Girl Utena for the first time, and finally finished Umineko: When They Cry. bizarre combination of works that have no obvious relation on the surface -- one is a kind of a magical girl anime and one is kind of a murder mystery visual novel -- and yet have so many shared themes that I could talk about for a while (the "kind of"
I absolutely do recommend both (I'd also love to talk about them if anyone is interested) but if you do watch (in Utena's case) or read (Umineko) please please please look up content warnings for both because oh boy do they both have some heavy subject matter and can be hard to stomach at certain points, especially if you go in blind

My high school literature teacher loved to tell our class fun facts about the author, Herman Melville and Moby Dick as we were reading and since it's tangentially related I feel obligated to share that some scholars do believe that Melville had some sort of attachment to Nathanial Hawthorne (author of The Scarlet Letter), and his feelings were projected in some of his works -- Moby-Dick in particular (I think there's still records of some letters that Melville sent to Hawthorne??)

Re: the coding conversation

I don't know how much this will help, but what I found works for me is to first think, "okay, how would I, as a human, approach this problem?" Then, after thinking about how a person would logically go about doing something, I would then transfer that process into code. Also: work through test cases! It'll help as well.

Programming can be daunting for sure, but remember that you never have to do everything all in one go! Work on everything piece by piece - my preferred order is "logic --> syntax --> test cases" but other people might do it differently.
