Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

I'm not sure about other works, but the two longer works of the 4 classics are only around 800,000 to 850,000 words. Plus, I'd argue English is easier to read than the Classical Chinese of the original. So maybe the length is because of that clarification.

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

I should talk about movies and shows I watch and complete huh? I think it would give more content for my homethread.

Last week, I watched Moonlight. I'm going to admit, this sorta movie wouldn't be something that I normally would watch. I said I enjoyed it somewhat. Interesting character piece or whatever

I would have enjoyed it more if the MOVIE PLAYING SOFTWARE DIDN'T BREAK DOWN AND PEOPLE WERE TALKING.

Sorry for all you guys out there that are like this. Watching movies to hang out with your friends, but when I'm watching a show or a film or something and I actually care about it, silence is usually best. If you make noise, I am going to give you the most judgmental side eye that I can give. Normally, I wouldn't be so judgy, but I'm immersed and you're breaking my immersion, you know? I think the only exception I'd make is if someone was crying.

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month (I suppose it can be international tho idk why it can't be that). and it is exactly what it sounds. The default challenge is that you have the month of November write a 50,000 word first draft of a novel (though I suppose it can be any manuscript?)

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

I really should keep what I am watching updated more yea?

Last weekend I spent my late night and early morning binge watching Castlevania Nocturne. And I just gotta say:

The animation, the music, the character designs, the fight choreography, all that is quite beautiful

But the writing is very much so below standards. Bad pacing, the character arcs are botched, (most of) the dialogue is, to be frank, foolish, the setting is weirdly written away, and so on and so forth; that seriously ruined the experience for me.

Now, I don't know if I'm in a majority or minority here, but that's my current opinion. I feel like I could write my ideas out on my writing thread, but I probably wouldn't unless if someone wanted a thorough explanation. Though of course I could just not write a page on why the writing is bad and like, also have a convo with someone.

Well, even though it wasn't very good, maybe it gets better as the next season comes around. Hopefully. Like I'm not even mad or anything, it's just all this effort and animation and stuff went into something that was lacking in the writing department and I'm kinda sad for that.

I'm thinking about my personal stories again. Actually making progress on MCs because I actually decided to sit down and develop characters.

Do you remember that one character I drew with the giant gun swords? Yeah I changed him a lot. I was ORIGNINALLY planning to kill him off so his foil could get development, but the new role I assigned him is much more fitting for his character... and it makes me do a double take on thinking about killing him or not.

That's valid too tbh, have you heard of the clean sketch method? Might be what you do. Essentially cleaning up the sketch enough that the lines look like lineart

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

It's one of those things that seems to be a thing (a trend) for a surprising number of artworks (I mean I think digital painters seem to do it quite frequently, though ofc it feels a bit different as well) but doesn't seem to be regarded as highly. At least not to the point where mainstream tutorials will advise doing it.
I think maybe it's because the value in lineart is so that beginners can actually learn what elements in their sketch are the most important in conveying shapes, texture, etc.? I dunno.
I do find it funny how you say you're lazy and so clean up your sketches, but meanwhile I [attempt to] do lineart because my sketches are too messy and cleaning them stresses me out. xD

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

Yeah I don't think a few of my art techniques are that highly regarded because they can be considered lazy or worse.

Maybe, but like, I would think lineart is best for training line confidence or something idk.

Dude the most recent stuff I posted on my art thread was the most lazy yet 😭 You can see random lines just sticking out, I didn't even clean up some of the base body stuff you draw before layering on the actual character details. Like if you check the character's arms you can still see remnants of the circles you draw at the elbows bruh

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

Anyways this post is sort of contradictory to the previous one I sent above BUT I need to talk about it. It's a call to arms, hopefully if anyone will bite.

I'm still reading thru Frieren, yeah? I am trying to understand the meaning/reasoning/character insight for one of the chapters I just read and I CAN'T GET IT 😭😭😭

I'm trying to reason through why a character would think a specific way, and I for some reason can't exactly put my finger on the answer. Even though thinking can be quite emotional, usually there is still a train of thought behind things, especially in this sort of story. I worry that it could be simply due to my personal experiences that I wouldn't understand or get it...

So I plead, if anyone can, help me with another perspective/insight!

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

I have no clue if it's possible for you to evaluate such things or not, but I just want another perspective. So thank you so very much!!

ofc I ain't forcing you to do anything when it comes to reading the thing or not 💀

Ok, here's the general gist that I am just thinking about. I have a few ideas of my own as to what they're trying to say but I really think it comes down to the perspective of the person. Note, I tried to replicate the word choices in the manga, so it may be important.

Ch. 81 spoilers but will try and refrain from using names so should be good right?

Ok, so setting the scene. The characters are talking about a character's hometown and why he wishes to visit it. The key thing about this hometown is that it's locked away in a barrier, which is used to contain a powerful foe who cursed the surrounding area to be fixed in gold. Granted, everyone is powerful enough to have permission to pass through this magic barrier. Anyways:

The reason why this character wants to visit his hometown is because that's where he and his wife lived, and also where her gravestone is. He wants to visit her again.
This is what he normally said. However now, he reveals more truth to why.
He always promised that he would return, but he made excuses and made himself busy with work to avoid actually doing so. He eventually became afraid of even remembering happy days he would spend with his wife.
When his hometown was sealed away, that is when he decided to make an effort to actually visit once more. However, it wasn't simple to save his hometown or something noble, he was going to visit to finally accept with his own eyes. If he saw his home town covered and gold and so much changed, he could finally accept that the memories of his wife and the place they lived in were gone. That he had abandoned those memories years and years ago.
Yet, he didn't forget. When he visited, even after all those years and the coat of gold, the place still held the dearest and most happy memories and could resurface them in his mind.
He then came upon realization, surprised that he was able to live with such a mindset. The mindset that those times were over, and he had moved on, because no matter how hard and painful his life had been, those happy days were true and genuine.

Ofc Frieren also has a similar memory to this in the same chapter but I'll give it later. For now, lets do it in pieces. I have a few ideas as to why you'd think this way, but I'm mostly stumped without a second (or more) opinions. Why would you be afraid to remember happy memories, for example?

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

Using spoiler tags for purely ironic purposes

Well, obviously, the actual "right answer" depends on the character's personality and how the theme of memories relates to the character himself, but right now I can think of two overarching ideas for why someone might be afraid to remember happy memories.
One, because it's not just a matter of confronting those happy memories, but also the fact that those happy memories were. He can no longer create new, comparable memories with his wife specifically, because she's gone now, and he can't bring her back. That means not only does he have to finally confront the truth of the person/people he lost, he also has to confront the fact that the only way still available to him is to move forward, creating new memories with different people in different places. This addresses the conflict you might perceive with someone being unwilling to go back to happy memories, versus the conventional sad ones. Maybe a possibility is that by accepting those happy memories, you also have to confront an unhappier and very much current reality.
Two, somewhat elaborating on that, is that those happy memories might produce an inner conflict within him. For instance, he may be of the mindset that if he remembers all the beautiful, bright times he had within his hometown, then how cowardly and pathetic would it be for him to give up on the notion of bringing them back, especially since it's implied he's already gotten over the past in his mind? Again, it depends on how he views concepts like bravery and memories, but I can see someone feeling like they'd be a hypocrite for recognizing how much value their memories have to them or a place has to them, but simultaneously wishing to let memories remain memories rather than taking further action to restore them or bring them back.
Again, I feel like the interpretation would vary a good deal if I were to know whom this character is, but so far I think those are two psychological reasons I can think about, though of course there's that personal bias. I think to some degree, I've also experienced a phenomenon similar to what you're describing here, though maybe not in as big of an extreme. It may help to envision a similar case for yourself where you might decide in a similar way to what this character does. (And if you want to hear me describe my personal examples, I could do so as well; I just didn't include them here because I wanted to keep things more general and thought-provoking for others to add on to.)
I reckon the coat of gold might serve a symbolic purpose as well, but I'm not too sure on that because I dunno how it's wielded in the setting and context of this arc. It's just a guess at something the authors might've chosen to put in. My visualization of it is that it parallels how he chose to approach his memories until now--to encase them in a hard shell of sparkling gold, so dazzling yet impermeable.

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

Revealing character name if you don't mind

The character's name is Denken. He has a wiki page with a decent blurb on his personality, if you wish to check.

I can definitely see the first reason being why he views it that way. If I'm trying to get at this correctly. The first one is about the fact if Denken were to remember those happy memories, in a way he'd have to be confronting the fact that the specific chapter with his wife was would be over? That nothing else would reach such heights? We can assume with good enough reason that Denken's life has been a painful one.

As to the second reason, I'm not too sure if he'd consider himself a coward time. He doesn't seem to have a low self esteem, nor an extreme ego. He's quite a passionate dude, even for an old guy, apparently.

I was considering a similar reasoning too --> Feelings of undeserving or something of the sort. Something like, "I don't deserve to be happy because my life has been very painful". Maybe a feeling of doubt such as, "Was I truely happy during those times? Something something about how living through a life of pain has changed a person and their viewpoint of happiness idk"

I find both of these thought processes to be highly irrational and I can't exactly wrap my head around them, though emotions are not exactly rational. I feel like if it was just explained or put in a different way, it would be easier to understand.

I curse my inability to properly visualize these throughts. It's frustrating to try and have an idea but not be able to type it out correctly. I feel like I need someone else's to help organize these thoughts.

But tangent aside. The coat of gold could seriously mean something. It's just that I read ahead a few more chapters, and apparently, isn't not just a coat, everything is fully transmuted to gold. Still, I think your interpretation can work. For me, the first thought that popped up in my head was King Midas. Even though I don't know the story very well, I'm pretty sure its easy to see a similar connection.

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

A coward time? xD
Humans' ways of dealing with trauma tend to be pretty illogical. I mean, think PTSD and Stockholm Syndrome--even though they're somewhat rare or not entirely proven (in the latter's case). Results like those seem to be the nature of strong emotions, like you said, but also the extremity of the situations that lead to them. "I don't deserve to be happy because my life has been very painful" is also something that seems so blatantly illogical at first glance, but then when one factors in how the individual's life might have involved other people belittling them at every little thing and telling them things that imply they don't deserve happiness from a very young age (for example), and I think one can see why loops like those are hard to break. That's kinda on a vaguely related side note (I just really like psychology), but yeah xD.

Back on Denken's case, I'm not too sure how well I can grasp his character from what's provided on his page, but yeah, the second idea doesn't seem to apply as well, if at all. So instead, I hope you'll take it as a more general, personally influenced concept.
I included the above portion despite it being only somewhat related to this part because I feel like no matter how old or experienced he might be, the situation is still pretty extreme. Even in a fantasy world, I reckon not too many people can say they experienced their hometown being turned into gold. So maybe the way he thinks about the situation and related factors isn't as consistent with how he usually thinks or acts. But that's only something to consider with you knowing the character better than I do; it's not part of any argument. From what I can tell, the reasons behind why he thinks the way he does is probably not as extreme or twisted, maybe because he has a stronger foundation to fall back on despite all these years of denial(?).

Re: Time's Boardhost Homethread - Time's Boardhost Homethread

I really ought to double check what I write. Sometimes words from old sentences are left behind.

But now that you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense for that sort of mindset for feeling undeserving of happiness. Idk why I thought of only the actual thought, and not the reasoning behind it, because I don't feel like people constantly belittled him. He's a very successful guy.

Yeah, I'm thinking so too. He probably has a less extreme mental trauma way of thinking about it, maybe. I'm not too sure what it might be though. Still. Maybe it will just take multiple read overs and some time to actualize itself.

Thanks for the help overall though. While I haven't come to definite conclusions yet, you did help me reframe some ways of approaching this. Do you want to continue on to another character's memory concerning the same thing and see if it is any different? Or maybe see if it will give us extra insights? Or do you want to stop here?
