Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

I'm the kind of person who gets irritated at having more than 5 tabs open at the same time but I've basically been forced to do that several times this semester and despite the suffering I sort of got used to the clogged up upper tab. Now it feels comfortable but weirdly empty and I'm still trying to shake off this strange sensation from my mind.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

Can't wait to experience snow for the first time xD I truly hope it snows where I'm going, even if just once. Imagine if the weather decided to just be straight cold with no snow during the duration of my trip lol
Anyways, as I wrote in my post several weeks ago, I'mma be gone for a while! I might post a little but I can't guarantee that at all. I'll be back in about a month and I hope to see everyone doing well by then.
Have fun you guys, enjoy your vacations/breaks and a happy new year in advance from me :3. Love y'all!

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

All safe and sound here! And the new organization is super cool but it will take me a while to get used to Homethreads being the first section in its own category. Anyways, a matter for later.
I love the weather here currently. Super duper sunny days but cold air! Amazing, I love. But I already miss pollo a la brasa.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

Well, I'm back! It's been an eventful month, so eventful that I actually want to just stay on my bed for two days straight to rest lol. I barely had any time to actually sit down and relax and that's okay since I was extremely busy all the while with things I don't usually do. I'm not gonna dump all the details of my trip but there's some highlights:
I was on curtain pulling duty for a play! We were short on scripts so I couldn't get ahold of one and so me and my curtain-pulling buddy had to memorize the scenes and rely on cues from the prop team. They forgot to give us cues lol. It was a very fun experience especially since I've never been onstage for a play. We didn't have a lot of time to rehearse (we had one dress rehearsal before the performance and new scenes were added then WHAT) but I'll say the actors did a wonderful job since most of them were kids who hadn't acted ever before in their liffe. I had lots of fun seeing everything that went on backstage too! Props to the prop team for carrying the play.
Also got to go to my first costume party ever :3 it was brand/product themed and I made my own costume for Cat Chow xD (and threw in a cat-ear headband for good measure)
I got to blow one of those tiny lil party horn thingies and had way too much fun lol
I SAW SNOW FOR THE FIRST TIME and got to make snowballs! No snowball fight since we just had to run around looking for piled up snow in order to make the snowballs (and I was too busy to have much free time) but it was fun. I love how my first reaction to holding a snowball (someone made it for me the first time bc I didn't know how to) was to bite into it.
I love highways and I love Chick-Fil-A why don't we have Chick-Fil-A in Peru it's so good literally I can't believe it was my first time eating it and I just love it so so much
I also love second hand stores why don't we have those in Peru either and most of all I love second hand BOOKSTORES like I don't have a ton of books because they're way too expensive but second hand solves all that like'???

There is definitely more stuff I would love to type out now, most of it extremely trivial to my experiences, but I think it's best if I just stop here for a bit.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

It was a very productive time all in all I'd say but between been extremely tired and having to travel and stuff I barely had any time to work on the stuff I wanted to work on lol. Anyways, no biggie. I'm home now so after a few days of rest I'll pick up on my personal projects.
Rn I'm dead tired because my fam basically got trapped in airports for two days. Our flights kept getting delayed and cancelled and moving gates and stuff so we ended up having to sleep in the airport two days straight??? Bad weather is no joke but I'm glad we made it home safe even with a stiff neck and all the detours (we weren't supposed to go to Mexico but we ended up briefly landing there lol) and strangely I feel like airports aren't that bad of a place to stay the night. Maybe I was too tired to think idk. However, I'll say I'm sure this has been a great learning experience on how to deal with flight troubles and rebooks and stuff. Stuff like this is something I never thought of doing so I think now I'd be prepared if I ever flew by myself and ran into some trouble of this sort. I'm just very happy I was with my family through it all. There was a lot of teamwork involved and I think we did great.

I haven't read it, but my research into LCB does point to the fact that he may in fact, have homosexual undertones.

But sometimes that also be homiesexual activity yk.

As to the trip, welcome back! It's good to hear that you enjoyed yourself a lot. I too enjoy chick-fil-a and secondhand bookstores. I actually just bought some books from one back when I was visiting family during the holidays. Also working the backstage for a play sounds pretty fun as well. I think if I were to do a play, I'd look into working in the background before looking to acting.

It must've sucked being stuck in airport hell, but it's good to hear you're looking on the bright side of things instead.

as someone who did read Moby Dick: he absolutely is

My high school literature teacher loved to tell our class fun facts about the author, Herman Melville and Moby Dick as we were reading and since it's tangentially related I feel obligated to share that some scholars do believe that Melville had some sort of attachment to Nathanial Hawthorne (author of The Scarlet Letter), and his feelings were projected in some of his works -- Moby-Dick in particular (I think there's still records of some letters that Melville sent to Hawthorne??)

also welcome back! flight cancelations/delays can be super stressful, but it's great that you learned something from it

Interest insights. I guess that puts the interactions into perspective xD
I've been enjoying the book, and I especially like the way name references are written in pretty much in every paragraph. Right now I'm not sure if it's supposed to be for symbolism or if it's a style choice, but either way, it's interesting.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

Also sorry @Time I forgot Ishmael was your favorite character there but I remembered (isn't she a girl there though? She's your waifu iirc? And wouldn't homosexual undertones in a genderbent character make her lesbian?)

Chick-fil-a is like solidly one of the best fast food I've ever had ngl

yeah LOL
glad you're enjoying it! Moby-Dick is such a weird read at times (I don't know if you've read any of the whale chapters yet but Melville loves to infodump) but it's so full of.... everything that there's so much to go through
my curse is that whenever I talk about this book I end up waxing metaphors (I blame this on my teacher because her love for this book was so infectious) but I'll keep quiet about that for now
Do let me know if you have any thoughts (+things you want to talk about) while reading! It's been 2 years since I read it but I still remember a good amount

And also I'm not Time but yup, Ishmael is a girl in Limbus Company. I never got into the game so I can't comment on her character there but she's the one character that really caught my attention and made me tempted to download the game

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

She's just my favorite character. No waifus, I don't take waifus. I do think she is cute and stands out tho.

But you're right, at some point we actually explore her relationship with Queequeg (who's also a woman). There are undertones of a romantic relationship, but I don't think they're simply just romantic. It can be interpreted in different ways, and no matter how you take it, it's more than just romantic or just a friendship when you look into it! In my opinion, it definitely feels like she had some sort of crush or something, but she said some stuff that you'd never say about your homies.

Also, actually 🤓, Ishmael has a very specific and interesting relationship between her and Heathcliff (who isn't genderbent). A relationship that can definitely lead to multiple branches. There are arguments that they can be really good friends, lovers, or even they just kinda have a connection where they can't see each other sit and rot. In my opinion, PM is constantly nudging hints about their future relationship being lovers, so if they go that way, she could very well be bi.

And Autumn, yeah! Her design really caught me attention and it was a factor in making me pick up the game! Though it's grown a lot more than just that, the world is very interesting as well and there's a lot to catch up lorewise for me, so that's been fun.

I also agree, Chick-fil-a is a pretty consistently good fastfood... probably a solid high B tier for me imo.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

Procrastination (and actually doing some things for once) got me and I didn't reply until now
Anyways I feel like I might give a few thoughs once I'm done with the book. Genuinely haven't been reading much this week lol but it's always a good time to pick up the book and continue reading! I agree that it's a weird read, but part of that makes it super interesting to me. I remember when reading the first chapters my thoughts were literally "Wow, the style is so interesting. I wouldn't want to write like that though. But it's still so interesting." It's definitely out of the ordinary.
I don't think that even being told that the author likes to infodump would have prepared me for that chapter which is like a whale encyclopedia 😭 although since everything is from the protagonist's pov it's more interesting to read? I do like the way his thoughts are sprinkled in between the narrative. That's fun.

Ok actually curious about this, does Queequeg have a design in the game? And if so could I see it please
Anyways I'll be paying closer attention to Time's game Ishmael writings. I've been curious about the game anyways ever since I read a lil bit more about its main page, although the character that caught my attention the most was Don Quixote (why did they genderbend that character out of all the possible ones???) because she looks so fricking cute and adorable and I'm hoping she is actually that way in the game too.

What work is Heathcliff from?

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

I don't think I've played a lot of full completion games except for Undertale and some Zelda games, but I play them again because I liked them? It's like experiencing the story anew. Ofc it's not completely the same as the first playthrough cause you already know the plot and what will happen, but a second playthrough is often where I can see small details that I missed during the first time because I was more focused on this or that. And also I'm more familiar with the control nows so I don't have to struggle as much with certain battles or stuff that might have given me a hard time the first time around.
My reason to replay games would be because I really liked them and because I want to focus on smaller aspects of the game such as music or story details. It's much like rereading books, cause in my life I have books that I have literally read to pieces just cause I liked them so much.
However, I'm thinking maybe a reason for revisiting the same media over and over is because of lack of variety? I don't play a lot of games, like I said, so the ones I've played I really like and I want to experience again. Same with books, I didn't have a large supply of novels to read when younger so I'd just reread my favorite ones over and over. But now that I have more, I find that I don't reread as much. Maybe if I had a larger library of games to play I wouldn't dedicate much energy to replaying. Just a theory.
It all boils down to "I like it and want to see it again".

LOL yeah that's exactly the chapter I was thinking about I think. As a narrator, Ishmael is incredibly interesting to think about (what does he add? what does he omit?) but I'll wait until you get further because there's some chapters that really make you go "huh" if you think about the fact that it's Ishmael who's supposed to be narrating. Also yeah Moby-Dick is such an adventure precisely because you don't know what you're getting into before it's too late

SpecterTheGreat wrote:

Heathcliff is from Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte! It's about a man (Heathcliff) who seeks revenge after the woman he loves marries someone else (it's been years since I read it, and to be honest I don't remember much from it other than that general gist. I think I'd probably get a lot more out of reading it now since admittedly 13 yr old me could not grasp what was going on thanks to the unreliable narration)

Also agreed that Don Quixote from Limbus is adorable lol. Her and Ishmael really had me tempted to play the game

Time wrote:

I know you're asking Specter but I'm in a similar boat -- I personally do not have a large library of video games, and that probably contributes to the amount of times I revisit games? But there's clearly another factor involved, because I don't replay every game, and there are some games I replay more than others -- the two in particular for me are Pokemon BW and Torna: The Golden Country. (I'm counting Torna separate from its base game Xenoblade 2 because I own it separately). And I revisit both games for very different reasons.
Pokemon White I think I've started like well over 20-25 different playthroughs (if you include the amount of times I've played Black it's even more but the Pokemon Black cartridge is my sibling's), but I've only ever "finished" maybe 5 at most? I know the story almost inside out (especially the first half of the game -- I can practically quote it) but what always brings me back is the combat, and the fun of trying out new teams. I'm a pretty casual Pokemon player, but something about the simple turn-based combat makes it kind of a comfort game for me.
Torna, on the other hand I absolutely replay for its story and its protagonists. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoy the combat of that game, too, but man. The story. It doesn't matter that I already know how it's going to end -- I will end up crying every time because the experience is always so heartful and there's nothing you can do to stop the characters from making the mistakes they do.
Most of the games I replay/revisit fall into the Torna category (I do it to re-experience), though to be honest I will usually try to do something so that this time at least something feels different, but usually what happens is that I don't finish it if I'm going through on my own. That's why it's nice to watch playthroughs or share the game with a friend, because it adds something fresh to the experience that I know I had already enjoyed once before.

Queequeg design

Certainty a strong woman... she's like a full head taller than Ish. Say, was there any metaphors about rope or knots in the book?

autumnlibrarian16 wrote:

Don's cute, I'd agree. She screams a lot and makes weird sounds and does stupid things and says things in enrgish and it's really badly pronounced with a lot of enthusiasm which makes it more funny.

Like I could probably bring up a few examples but it would require lots of context and stuff ha.

SpecterTheGreat wrote:

Dang it bruh you know I was lowkey looking that I could dip from that project because do you know how many times I've rewritten entries because I don't know how I should structure them in a proper way to deliver an analysis on her character? It's hard for me to section out what to talk about where because they all interconnect with one another. Plus summarizing the entirety of Canto V so I can give evidence that has context??? It's been tough man 😭😭😭

Maybe I'll look to be less summarization and whatnot but knowing you have an eye on it I'll think about working on it between me working on Hidden Sails.

As to the replay value...
I see, just to relive the tale again. I can somewhat get that. Yeah. While I haven't rewatched entire shows through and through or reread books all the way, I do still check out specific scenes mostly check for hidden details of get some creative inspiration. But I have not gone enough to complete a game say, 4 times, or start a new playthrough 25 times. Maybe it could also be the length of time it takes to complete a game? How long are Pokemon games and Zelda games?

Oooh that's a really good design. And yes, there were! Many! I don't remember them too well but if I remember right there's at least a whole chapter dedicated to rope/knots. One of the interpretations I remember is how the rope is a physical reminder of how the ship crew and their fates are connected

Pokemon White is like, a 10 hour game maybe? Depends on how long you spend grinding. Most of my playthroughs of that game don't get past the 2-3 hour mark (what will happen is that I start a playthrough, play it for 1-2 days, and then forget about it for like 9 months and then want to restart). My most "current" one is probably the closest I've gotten to the ending in a while, I think I'm around 15 or so hours into it (I stopped right around Victory Road/pre-endgame) but that playthrough is very intentionally slower
But also yeah I do like to revisit specific scenes as well, especially with games that are on the longer end. The shear number of times I've gone back to watch particular clips from the Trails games is almost concerning (but it's still better than committing to a new 70hr long playthrough for each game)

Yeah I was wondering that. Queequeg had a lot of metaphors concerning ropes (also she's covered in ropes).

autumnlibrarian16 wrote:

Ah that may be something. I most games I play really long so that's probably why I can't get much of a playthrough. It may also have to do with mindsets. Just to compare, when I start up a new playthrough, I predict that I will make a full run through the game, no matter how long. Is that the same for you? Or is it more just reliving the game once again?

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

WOW that is one good Queequeg design. I can see why game Ishmael would be gay for her 🛐🛐🛐
I don't really recall any specific details about rope from what I've read so far, but maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention. I'll be sure to look for those going forward though. Love me some good metaphors even if the way I react to them is nodding and agreeing or something like that.

Tbh I think about Limbus now and then, and I would say that often I'm just one step from downloading the game just to see what it's like. The only thing stopping me is remembering that I already play F/GO and I'm not sure if piling another game on top of that would be good for my time management (which almost doesn't exist), but if another friend started playing it then I would strongly consider getting the game.
I'm glad to hear Quixote is cute in the game too. However, I'm curious, do other characters call her "Don" in-game? Because if so then I wonder if her name is fully "Don Quixote" in the game or if it isn't, as "Don" is a title in Spanish much like "Mister" but for the first name, and so her name would just be Quixote (and in the book the character's name is actually Alonso Quijano [I suppose it would be Quixano in English?] but he changed it for a knight-worthy name because he's delusional lol). It does feel super duper weird for me to see the character addressed just as "Don", which is why I'm wondering xD. Also because I really enjoy the Don Quixote story. It's very fun xD. Are there any mentions to Sancho Panza in Don Quixote's in-game story/character?

This part for @Time, don't feel pressed to write your reviews just cause I want to read them. This just means that I'll check up on them once they're out, not that I'm asking you to summarize everything RIGHT NOW. I love reading others' reviews because apparently I can't write and post my own lol  and of course, in this case your opinions and perceptions along with the canon facts. And summarizing is hard, especially when it's a lot of content with tons of details and little things that interconnect. I feel like that's the main reason I tend to hit writing block when I try to make summaries or reviews of media I like.

Now some extra comments before I go on to the next topic: Last weekend I was absolutely raving over Moby Dick because it's the first book I've read that includes mentions of Peru while not being written by a Peruvian author. And it's just, wow. In the first chapters the country was acknowledged (along with other South American ones) and I was like, oh good! but then there were more comments about the Callao port, and there was a specific paragraph dedicated to throwing shade on the white overcast skies of Lima, and then the solitude that the view of the snowcapped Andes mountains inflict on the viewer (which I agree with, partially, I love the way the Andes look from afar but it does feel lonely in a nice sort of way when you're around that part) and that was simply amazing. To top it off, it wasn't all, and there's a chapter in which Ishmael mentions two specific friends from Lima talking with him AND they're drinking chicha! I wonder if it's chicha morada or chicha de jora but anyways I know that would be the least important thing for the author to mention. I was absolutely elated at reading all the Peru mentions, and all the little details. Amazing. Props to Melville for including that, and I raise a glass of chicha morada to toast for him.

Re: The Idea Fortress 🍭👻🍭 Specter's Homethread,

Forgot to mention this in the last post but there's a random sailor character that is from either Peru or Bolivia because of the way he's addressed, and just for the sake of it I want to believe he's Peruvian.

~

On the topic of games and replays:
I think I mostly replay for fun. I do like to go for full game completion but a lot of the time I might forget about the replay halfway through and pick it up months later again. It happened to me with Majora's Mask. And I definitely agree with Autumn on the point of sticking better to games (and media/activities in general!) when there's someone else like a friend following along. In one of my first replays I was sharing the story and details with my dad and it kept me playing very attentively so I could get all the little details to ramble on to him. I remember also sticking to finishing Undertale because I was streaming it to a friend and so there was more motivation to continue experiencing the story. It helps and is a whole ton of fun! I deifnitely recommend the streaming experience.
As for the Zelda games, I'd say that they all vary in length and depend on whether you want to go for story completion, side-quest completion, or 100% completion. I've never done 100% on any of the games (though the friend that introduced me to the games did and without a walkthrough 💀) but for Majora's Mask I did all the side quests. To be fair I love the "worldbuilding" in MM, and so I was very invested in the characters' side quests (ANJU AND KAFEI QUEST BEST STORYLINE) and I knew I'd get an useful in-game reward for finishing everything. But 100% completion in Zelda games is a bit tedious ngl, because you have to get all pieces of heart and while sometimes that involves exploration ir oftentimes involves grinding for a while. I don't have the patience for that. Like, in Minish Cap to get the final piece of heart you have to get all 100-something rewards from a roulette thingy in-game with special in-game currency, and not only are you capped on the currency but you can also get duplicates and as soon as I found that out I abandoned the idea of 100%-ing the game xD. A dedicated player would do it, though. I'm just not dedicated enough. So I tend to stick to main quest and exploration. If I ever replayed Link's Awakening I'd look into the sidequests there because I think I didn't do any lol. And I don't think Ocarina of Time has a lot of extra sidequests anyways.
Those are the ones I've played, though there are many other games in the franchise. BotW (which I have not played) is infamous for having to find 900 of something to get 100% completion, and it just has a ton more exploration content simply because it's more of an open-world game and it's designed to let the player explore and sandbox there. Most if not all of the other Zelda games, however, have a more linear storytelling with sidequests here and there and missions if you look for them. I believe that's how most games are.
I tend to spread my gaming sessions a bit and I definitely don't speedrun so, depending on how often I play, a Zelda game with main story completion played by me can take anywhere from one week to a month.

I mean that's understandable, for sure. Limbus the only live service game that I play, so I can get the viewpoint. However from the other side, you can still play the game at your own pace. I know the community calls her Don for short, but I legit cannot remember if she's ever referred to as "Don" in the game lol. That's mainly because lots of characters call her "Don Quixote" and don't use any nicknames for her. I think a few times some call her "Donqui", which I'm sure is on purpose to some extent for like, sancho's "horse" or whatever I don't really know where I was going with this.

As to current references to Sancho Panza/the book, she has not had a chapter where a story is centered around her yet, so we have only gotten little bits and hints to her past in just passing dialogue. There are subtle references here and there that can be interpreted in multiple ways (such as her persona being a front), but the only explicit reference is:

In Canto III, where she mentions that her "old friends" would use physical violence to bring her back to her senses if she was ever too caught up or passionate about something (wholesome... physical abuse?).

However, there will be a chapter focused on her coming up soon! Just after Heathcliff, so that would be the next chapter after the current one we are waiting for. I'm sure we'll get a lot more answers then.

Oh I see, yeah, most of the games I play take a few months to beat for me at least. Even though I don't really play games in a way where there is someone following along, I agree that it for sure will help you complete it. It's like the same thing with a book club or something, you know?
