[PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

This is fully public, so even if you/your characters haven't participated in this before, come on in if you want because I straight up Do Not Care!!!

I have had way too much caffeine and am too hyperfixated on my characters to do this concisely, but just so we're all on the same page, this involves roleplay events that happened around 2020 along with offscreen stuff in the past. Here's a refresher that you don't have to read if you don't want to but I'm Me, so I wrote it anyway.

The Long Explanation That's Still Leaving Out A Lot:

- We've got Anatina, a kingdom within the medieval sect. Long ago it was embroiled in a decades-long war with its neighboring kingdoms. Ruled by King Prospero I and Queen Fortuna, with its army and militia headed by their son, Prince Prospero (because nepotism). Both King and Prince were invited to a peace talk, but were attacked and assassinated, leaving Queen Fortuna to ascend the throne
- Fortuna's kind of tired of all the fighting considering her whole immediate family got wiped out. Ishmael pops up, newly deified and eager to prove himself by stabilizing the region. The two grow close while working together, and Fortuna has a son, Felix, demigod of Ishmael. Around this time Ishmael convinces Anatina's local kelpie, Figura, to stop eating the villagers and installs him as Fortuna's head guard/advisor. Ish and Fortuna mutually part ways because he's gotta go be a god and she's gotta go be a queen. Ish performs a very powerful blessing on the land for bountiful harvests and all that good stuff before he leaves. Felix is raised as the son of an unnamed/probably dead noble, and the only people who know of Felix's true lineage are Fortuna and Figura oh my god why do they all have F names I just noticed
- Fortuna dies for some reason that I don't remember and I'm pretty sure isn't relevant, Felix becomes king, and Figura's still hangin out with him and everything is chill
- Sike, weird stuff keeps happening in the kingdom like weird diseases on their crops and things dying for seemingly no reason. Around this time, rumors abound of sightings of Prospero, Anatina's beloved Blood Prince, as young as the day the kingdom lost him.
- Ishmael is killed by Dust, breaking his blessing over Anatina and causing the kingdom to fall into famine for the first time in like, 25 years
- Prospero at this point knows that Felix is either a.) his half brother or b.) lying about it, and challenges Felix for the throne with the backing of the Corrupted Deities and some very angry metal birds. The two duel, Felix sustains a near-fatal injury from Prospero's knives and is only spared when Huck the Bushbeast responds to his distress and pretty much kidnaps him
- Through a series of events, Felix is now being treated at the Clocktower, but he has severe amnesia and has no idea what's going on and is not in a state to investigate himself, so Huck offers to travel to Anatina with a couple others to see what they can find out.

TLDR: coup in the kingdom of Anatina. Former king, Felix, is Ishmael's demigod. The guy who staged the coup, Prospero, is Felix's long-lost older half brother (they have the same mother). Prospero overthrew Felix with the help of the Corrupted Deities and Friends and Felix is assumed dead, but he's alive thanks to a rescue from Huck, and currently chillin in Clocktower while grappling with the effects of Prospero's necrosis poison and also the fact that he can't remember a thing. Huck is now back in Anatina with some people to Scooby Doo the place and figure out what's going on. We are now around a year post-coup.

Also, if you've got Corrupted Deities you want to throw in here, it's not necessary but you're welcome to bring 'em in if you'd like if you think it makes sense. I’m being stupidly ambitious with this and I apologize in advance for the mess this is going to be.
There’s a whole lot of ways this can go, so we’re only going with one Thread Vibe song for now. Content Warning for language and repeated mentions of death:

|××××××××××|××××××××××|

The sun has risen over the kingdom of Anatina, bathing it in light. Well, it would, if it wasn’t for the dense fog that clung unnaturally to the land, lending everything a gray, dull hue. A far cry from the bustling, vibrant agricultural powerhouse it had been only months ago, the fields on the outskirts of the city now lay fallow, utterly deserted. Husks of dead crops and churned earth stretched into the distance, broken only by the occasional run-down farmhouse dotting the landscape.

A low rumble broke the silence and the ground split as Huck’s head broke the surface, sending a plume of dust into the air. The Bushbeast looked around briefly for any sign of life before hauling himself out the rest of the way. The dirt spilled into the cavity where he had just been, hiding any trace of his entrance. He scanned the area around him once more, out of habit more than anything else. If anything had been around to spot him, he would have known already. Still, he knew he stuck out quite a bit, being a giant living plant in a field of dead things. He sniffed and pawed at the ground for a moment and hunkered down, waiting for the rest of his group to arrive.

They had agreed to meet a short distance outside of the main city to convene before venturing within its walls, but now that he was here, Huck worried about them being able to locate one another when everything looked so similar. There was also the problem that he didn’t know exactly who he was meeting up with. Sure, he had a general idea, but Time had only spoken vaguely about “sending some mages”.  Huck hadn’t been keen to make the trek with them on account of his leg still healing and had opted to just meet them there, but he was beginning to realize he needed to get into the habit of asking for specifics. Well, given that it was pretty desolate out here, it was relatively safe to assume anyone who approached him was one of Time’s mages. He let out a sigh and rested his great head on his paws, staring out at the outer walls of the city. Interestingly enough, it looked as if the fog cleared towards the middle of the city, right around the castle that towered over every other building. Huck could see the sun hitting its walls, shining like a beacon through the haze.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

A door appears out of thin air, and Ark walks through it. "Helloooo!" He, as requested, came in disguise. He now appears to be a human being wearing a very dark purple suit, to the point where it's almost black.  "We ready to get this party started?" He snaps his fingers, and the door vanishes. "It's Ark by the way. You know, purple man?"

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

((I may throw Oblivion or Senshei if it would make sense))

"It's not a party, it's a down-low operation, sir." A hooded figure walks to the Bushbeast and the disguised god. They stop, and take off their hood to reveal Heaven, "Good day to you two." She nods. Having her normal serious and by-the-book disposition about her.

Over time, another hooded figure approaches, and after more time, another comes as well. They made it seem if they were separate from one another. But anyone in the group could probably easily tell that they were Clocktower mages as well.

((Yo if any clocktower mage people wanna insert their character just take one of the hooded figures btw))

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Huck lifted his head and acknowledged the new arrivals with a nod, but didn't move to stand yet. He was feeling a bit apprehensive about entering a mortal city, even with the company of others. It had been a long time since he had done something like this, and it had always been with the company of either Milo or Ishmael. He had heard Ishmael mention Anatina a couple times before, but this was nothing like the god had described. The Bushbeast didn't necessarily count his last appearance here as a visit at all, considering he had burst out of the ground, grabbed an actively dying mortal, and disappeared immediately afterward.

"Yes, we are not here for fun," the creature said to Ark.

"All of us mages are here" Heaven motions her head to the other two hoodied figures, "We're not expecting anyone else, unless, Huck?" She turns her gaze to him.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

"I do not believe there is anyone else," the Bushbeast replied, finally getting to his feet. Dust and clumps of soil still clung to him, and he shook himself like a wet dog to dislodge it, not really taking those gathered nearby into consideration. With a final uneasy glance around the barren fields, he began to walk in the direction of the heart of Anatina.

"I am not sure what to expect here," the creature admitted as he moved. "This is unlike anything I had been told about this region. I can feel the... I am unsure of the word in your language, but I can feel it gnawing on me. It is not a poison, but it wants to destroy. Whatever is happening here is not an ordinary blight or famine."

As the group neared the outer walls, it became easier to see the activity on the ramparts. Mixed among the mortal guards were massive metallic birds about the same size as the guards themselves, perched on the walls overlooking the fields. They were statuesque, unmoving save for the occasional ruffle of bronze feathers or a tilt of the head, but they all had their gaze fixed on the approaching group with an eerie intensity.

On the ground, a rather nondescript gate was manned by mortal guards. Standing front and center in the middle of the path was a possibly familiar figure. She wore no armor, but the elaborate black and red tunic she wore emblazoned with the Ouroboros crest of Anatina marked her as an individual of some importance. The sleeves of her tunic had been ripped off, revealing intricate geometric tattoos covering her arms and legs. Gevar stood with her arms crossed, watching the group with the same inky black eyes as the birds perched on the walls above. It seemed like she was waiting for someone in the group to speak first.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Heaven gritted her teeth. She did not like the look of this already. If a fight were to ensue, since they were clearly outnumbered, they might be overtaken. Well, Ark might not, due to his deity status, but they couldn't rely on him for safety and safe passage. So a diplomatic approach had to take place.

Heaven stepped in front of the others. Revealing the truth might be a bad idea, which put all eyes on them, even hostile ones, but Heaven just wasn't the type of person to hide the truth. Plus, this is to be a diplomatic mission, "Greetings. My name is Heaven Dean, a mage of Time and Chronos. As to whom am I speaking to?"

((I'm p sure I've used Germaine in a thread related to these characters before but I honestly don't remember the context very well, so please correct me for any inconsistencies in dialogue or anything. I'll try to keep up I promise.))

A lady in a purple dress joined the group! She brushed off the dirt that fell on her, and remained silent while approaching the outer walls. Germaine's eyes scanned the area, taking in the metallic birds, guards, and unfriendly atmosphere. Would they be allowed entry? Heaven sounded confident in her words, but there was no telling how the guards would react.
Given that there are magical things involved in this, she didn't bother to conceal her true appearance.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

There was a long silence as Gevar regarded the group. This was quite a motely crew, but who was she to question a delegation from not one but two deities? She raised a hand and one of the birds took off from the parapet, soaring in the direction of the castle.

"My name is Gevar, I am the head of Anatina's royal guard. I apologize for the lack of welcoming committee, I was not notified of your arrival." her tone was polite, but strained. The other guards were shifting their weight and exchanging nervous glances with one another. "What is your purpose here?" she continued. "I assume you seek an audience with King Prospero? We don't normally receive visits of this nature."

Huck's ears lowered slightly. "A member of the guard does not need to know our business. We come in peace and that is all that is necessary to know."

Another stretch of silence from the woman. It didn't make much of a difference to her. She would hear about it soon enough. "Very well. Some of my birds will escort you to wherever your destination may be. Try not to cause too much trouble. It's far too early in the day for that kind of headache."

With another wave of her hand, four birds launched off the wall, landing around the group on either side of them. Their weight caused cracks to spiderweb in the ground under their talons, but they moved fluidly, as if they were made of flesh and bone and not several hundred pounds of metal.

Huck growled softly, leaning uneasily away from the flock. Gevar smirked and stepped aside, allowing the group to enter the city.

You know, thinking about it, Heaven is actually a pretty good counter against Gevar's flock. Since she's well versed in metal manipulation.

But anyways that's besides the point. Heaven started to make the uneasy walk to within the city walls. Carefully peering at any place for a possible ambush. Or just keeping aware of any sort of eyes on them.

Ark squints, and a barely noticeable yellow glow begins to emit from his eyes. He begins to look around, scanning the city's souls and trying to locate any... irregularities. "Cool metal birds. Feel like I've seen 'em before."

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

The birds were eerily silent except for the occasional rasp of metal as their feathers slid over each other. They weren't steering the group in any particular direction, simply moving along with them and casting occasional glances at citizens they passed by.

There was a good number of them out, gawking at the odd group-- apparently, word traveled fast. They muttered amongst themselves and there was an awful lot of pointing, specifically at Huck. Everyone they saw seemed to have fallen on hard times. The vast majority of them were thin and pale, and there was constant sniffling and coughing heard as the group ventured through the streets. Their faces would brighten at the sight of newcomers, but would just as quickly fall back to a wary stare as they saw the Stymphalian birds among them. The fog was just as dense in the city as it was in the fields, so many of the mortals simply retreated back into the mist.

Huck's ears flattened even more, practically hidden in the mane of foliage around his head. This was far too much attention for his taste, and being surrounded by sick mortals was wildly uncomfortable. The walls and buildings felt suffocating; he was entirely out of his element.

Ark's search on the nearby souls would not have revealed much. There wasn't much in the way of abnormalities. For all intents and purposes, everyone's souls were extremely normal. However, it's quite possible both Ark and Heaven could sense magic blanketing the city. Several kinds, actually, strangely combined and melded together to make something entirely new.

The group made its way deeper into the city, finally ending up at what looked like a main square. Set just outside the castle gates, it was clear it had once been a very lively area. Shop stalls scattered around the perimeter lay abandoned or destroyed completely, with scorch marks littering the paved stones and wilted, decaying greenery. The bottom half of a statue stood in the center, not much left of it besides a plaque and part of the legs of whoever it was supposed to represent. It appeared to have been struck by lightning.

A few people were loitering about the area, most laying or wandering listlessly. When the group arrived, one of the mortal's eyes widened as she pointed enthusiastically at the group.

"A Bushbeast! A Bushbeast!" she crowed, over and over. This caught the attention of some of the others in the area, who seemed to gain newfound energy at the sight of Huck. They began to approach the group, amassing a couple dozen curious mortals, but they balked as the bird escorts let out a low hum, their feathers warming up enough that they rippled with heat and the fog turned to steam, curling off their wings. In response, the mortals simply kneeled were they stood, bowing at the group.

"It is alright," Huck rumbled to the guards. He wasn't sure they would actually listen to him, but he didn't want anybody getting hurt at his expense. That would not have bode well for a diplomatic mission. After a moment, the heat dissipated. The flock seemed a bit on edge, however. Huck didn't blame them, honestly. He had never encountered something like this before.

A murmur of shock had rippled through the crowd as he spoke, but now many hands reached forward, gently touching his front legs and shoulders. It was almost reverent, the way someone would approach a celebrity or some legendary creature. Huck glanced back at the others uneasily, but didn't move for fear of accidentally squishing someone. The mortals were chattering excitedly to one another, so many of them that it was impossible to make out what they were saying. Huck stood, motionless, unsure of what to do.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

"You didn't tell us you were a celebrity around here." Ark, who has noticed the weird magical amalgamation, is studying it, trying to make sense of it. If possible, he might even be trying to subtly slip past the birds and wander off, changing his disguise, and temporarily turning a little more transparent, so he can go investigate it more.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Heaven noticed Ark's possible sneaking away. With a hidden signal, she notified one of the other mages to stealthy follow him during the commotion. Better to stick in small groups.

Heaven then studied the crowd around Huck. Their condition, their emotions, any possible threats, and anything that might give insight to her in any way.

She let them huddle around the Bushbeast for a few moments, but eventually thought, and announced, "Greetings, all. We are a diplomatic team sent from the deities Time and Chronos." She continues on, "We are attending an audience with your ruler to learn the state of Anatina after the transfer of power, and the fall of the original patron deity." ...They new Ishmael was dead, right? Hopefully. She also exchanged words like "coup" to "transfer of power" to keep it more neutral sounding.

While she keeps it subtle, one could also get the feeling she was encouraging the commoners to speak on the state of their country, from their point of view.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

((yeehaw))
The Stymphalian birds' attention was divided, bristling at the close proximity of Anatina's citizens. If Ark (and anyone else) wanted to slip away, the time would be now. From a cursory glance, the god probably could parse out hints of water and weather magic and the dregs of some old protection spell, among other, smaller components weaved through it.

At Heaven's words the crowd's volume reached a crescendo, peppering the group with a mix of exclamations and questions. The woman who originally pointed out Huck pushed to the front of the group and they quieted as she began to speak.

"We would traditionally welcome you with a basket of fruit and a hearty meal, but," she glanced at the birds, her eyes narrowing slightly. Her words came more slowly, chosen carefully. "The region has recently fallen on hard times. Anatina has not seen emissaries of the pantheon in many years, though I am sure King Prospero would not turn you away..."

The woman began to cough violently, causing Huck to lean forward in concern. "That sounds quite bad," the dhole commented. He lifted a huge paw, causing the group of mortals to instinctively back away as he gently placed a claw on the mortal's chest. His eyes glowed slightly in their sockets, and as he removed his paw the woman's cough began to ease as she gave the Bushbeast a grateful nod.

There was a moment of pure silence, but the crowd pressed forward again, their voices now pleading and desperate as they surged forward, grabbing at Huck more insistently than they had before. A wave of sickness and disease flooded his senses-- not a single mortal in this crowd was fully healthy.

Overwhelmed, he stumbled backward, careening into one of the birds that flanked him, who slammed into the ground with a shriek that sounded like metal scraping metal. The rest of the entourage burst into flame as they turned in unison to face the diplomatic party, causing the gathered mortals to scatter and flee. The flames ceased just as fast as they had appeared, but the birds were now much closer to the group. They did not seem too inclined to allow the group to wander aimlessly any longer.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Below the magic surrounding the region, there was a dark will unattached to any soul. Ark would notice the feeling of every darkened corner or slight fold away from light staring at him without eyes. It would seem that Dust knew of the group's arrival, and its power would almost feel as though gathering in the shadows around the two groups to the ones sensitive to such a thing.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Ark slips away, weaving magic around himself and any mages who follow him to make them seem like inconspicuous peasants, while also creating illusory clones that walk off in other directions. He notices all of the various magical presences, and begins searching for a source of the amalgamation, while making a point to try and distract Dust with clones. That should cover it. Can’t have a battle smack in the middle of this village, it’d draw too much attention. He looks around, observing the magic around him, and thinking. Whoever cast this spell must be a decently strong mage. Most curious indeed.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

The Bushbeast still seemed a bit shaken. He had never been fully comfortable around mortals given his past, especially being gawked at, and this had not done much to assuage that. Still, they had a job to do. He took a moment to steady himself, the leaves around his body rising and falling back into place in unison as if the wooden creature was taking a deep breath to steady himself.

"Yes, I think it is time we meet the king of Anatina," he rumbled, looking at the metal birds. "Lead the way, I suppose."

In a rustle of feathers, the birds began to move the group to the opposite side of the square towards the castle gates.

|xxxxxxxxxx|xxxxxxxxxx|

As Ark's group moved along, the fog gradually began to thicken as the god tracked the origin of the magic. They ended up in a residential area, cobbled streets lined with buildings. There were still some mortals milling around, but there was a curious concentration of guards in the area. They were not standing at any particular spot, but the unmistakable livery of Anatina's forces were visible on nearly every street. They paid the group no mind aside from an acknowledging glance.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

Dust's eyes still do not lift off of Ark's group, the shadows darkening seemingly at random. It doesn't seem to want a fight just yet, merely keeping an eye on the intruding god in case one needs to happen. Conversely, the shadows seem just about normal around Heaven, Huck, and Crimson. There is little lingering power, certainly enough for Dust to see them, but not much more.

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

"Oy...I never even got your name come to think of it...not that it would matter.  I don't really need names to tell anyone apart." Crimson ran in front of Heaven and stood there.  "And also, stop acting like this is all a trap.  If anything, everyone would be able to find trouble if needed."

"Heaven Dean. Clocktower Mage." She says to Crimson, not sparing the time to look back to him, "You're right, this isn't a trap. We came here on our own volition."

"But Time considered Ishmael an ally. Ishmael was this country's patron deity. The usurpers of this country used more violent means to do so, and it's possible that Corrupted Deities had their hands in this. I consider it to be enemy territory." She whispers to Crimson, "I know you're more of a separate force from our party, so you can do whatever you want, but I recommend to keep a sharp eye."

Ark continues to pursue the fog, summoning a small orb of light to use as a lantern.

Crimson looks at Heaven in the eyes.  "Trust me.  I'll keep watch.  In the mean time, let's try to get along." he said and held out his hand.  "Crimson Kasani.  Formally known as Cor Kasaki.  Use whichever you like."

Re: [PLOT] What time is it? It's Anatina time!

"I am Huck," the Bushbeast responded to Crimson, either not noticing or not caring that he was not the subject of that question.

The birds escorted them through the heavy castle gates, which swiftly slammed shut behind them. At this point, some of the flock wordlessly peeled away from the group and lifted off, leaving them with four remaining. The retreating birds swooped back towards the direction of the city's outer wall.

Huck visibly relaxed, for a couple reasons. He no longer had to be a somewhat flammable object surrounded by things that could catch fire whenever they wanted, and the courtyard the group now found themselves in was alive. Large trees whose boughs were abundant with various types of fruit from all sorts of climates flanked the pathways. Grass sprouted in the well-manicured lawns, accompanied by various wildflowers. Different garden beds dotted the area, some being dutifully watered by groundskeepers. Birds, actual birds, could be heard throughout. Even the heavy fog was absent, allowing the sun to shine freely on the various nobles meandering about. A far cry from the citizens they had just encountered, they were clean, well-fed, and healthy. A few of them gave the group a hearty wave and scattered comments along the lines of "Welcome! We heard of your arrival!"

There wasn't much in the way of room for the group to wander about. It was a walled courtyard after all, and the remaining Stymphalian birds began to settle down, crouching down right where they had been standing, but still keeping an eye on the group. On the opposite side of the courtyard was an ornate door with two guards posted in front of it; the entrance to the throne room.

Huck gladly took this opportunity to make his way over to the nearest patch of grass and throw himself down into it, the force of his impact causing a few passerby to look at him with thinly veiled contempt. They did not seem nearly as excited or interested in the Bushbeast as the peasants were.

The fog continued to get heavier, so dense that it would be near impossible to see any guards nearby and only the vague outlines of buildings can be seen. From the depths of the fog came a gutteral, animalistic scream. To a trained ear, it was... almost horselike??

A second scream followed almost immediately after, only this time it was more panicked and shrill, and cut off abruptly.

“When in doubt, follow the weird screams!” Ark rushes off towards the screaming, summoning a small dagger for self defense. His full scythe would be too unwieldy in the fog.
